William Earnest Towles,Sr.

Obituary William Earnest Towles, Sr., 78, was the only child born to the late Eddie Towles and Lettie Towles. He was born September 3, 1934 in Warsaw County, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his cousin Jack Lee who he loved as a brother and two grandchildren Bobby Jr. and Rondell Towles. At an early age, William accepted his Lord and Savior and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warsaw County. As a young child, William moved with his parents to Henrico County where he attended Gravel Hill School. Born to share croppers parents, William had a work ethic that was second to none. He began work at an early age and learned how to tend the Mead Farm with his father. William decided to join the United States Army, but since he was an only child, he was not allowed. William married his sweetheart, Catherine Oliva Baker in holy matrimony on October 24, 1954 and from their union were blessed with nine children. He was formerly employed by the County of Henrico in the Public Works Division for forty-four years. He received several awards and certificates for his outstanding and dedicated work performance. For more than eighteen years, William worked two full time jobs. He worked for the county during the day and MCV Hospital in the Housekeeping Department at night. William was content staying in the back ground, he was not one to be out front. When asked why he turned down the supervisory positions that was offer him on both of his jobs, his reply was “that’s not me, its just another headache”. He was well mannered and was well respected by his coworkers. Though he did not obtained a higher education, he had the wit to provide for his family as a hard working man. William enjoyed outdoor nature by fishing and hunting. He cherished his 12-gauge shot gun and 22-caliber riffle. In his leisure, he loved to listen to his oldies-but-goodies music and watch old western movies, especially those with John Wayne in them. In addition, he also enjoyed his citizen band radio listening to police, fire, and medical activities. Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Catherine Oliva Towles; 9 children, Shirley Alfreda Towles, Lettie Luemma Cooke (Frank), Willie Ann Towles (Alan), Rosetta Alberta Towles (George), Peggy Ann Cottman, William Towles, Jr. (Nancy), Robert Leon Towles (Pam), James Earnest Towles and Bobby Gene Towles (Delores), 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sylvia Johnson; brother-in-law, Wardell Baker, Sr.; 2 devoted friends, Bernadine Cottman and Lavania Coleman; and a host of relatives and friends. We are so fortunate to have had him in our lives for so many years and we feel empty without him. Because of the wonderful love he shared, he will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts.
