William Harper, Jr.

William Harper Jr. was born on November 27, 1955, in Norfolk, Virginia to the late William and Delois Harper. He transitioned peacefully to his heavenly eternal home on May 14, 2026, after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. Throughout his journey, he relied on his faith in God for strength and encouragement, trusting fully in His divine plan. William leaves behind a life defined by devotion to enduring faith, family, and an appreciation for life’s simple blessings. William graduated from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and remained a dedicated Spartan throughout his life, often proudly sporting his NSU apparel. It was also at Norfolk State where he met the love of his life, Brenda, with whom he shared thirty-nine beautiful years of marriage built on love, partnership, and cherished memories. William had a lifelong love for sports, especially football and basketball. Though he often said he rooted for the home team, the Baltimore Ravens, those closest to him knew he was also a loyal fan of the Buffalo Bills. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing basketball with friends and took pride in perfecting his free throw shot on the court. A lifelong learner, William loved reading, especially books centered on finance and personal growth. He had a passion for learning about investments and stocks and enjoyed games of logic and strategy, particularly chess. He was also an avid fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation enjoying its themes of exploration, intellect, and possibility. Family was at the center of William’s heart. He treasured time spent with loved ones, especially during the holidays, creating memories filled with laughter, warmth, and connection. Although his career took him to upstate New York and later Maryland, he always made it a priority to return home to Portsmouth, Virginia; reconnect with family and remain rooted in the community that shaped him. William dedicated many years of service to the Comptroller of Maryland, retiring in December 2022. He found fulfillment in helping others navigate the challenges of tax preparation, but even more meaningful to him were the genuine friendships he formed with his colleagues over the years. William is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Harper; his daughter, Tiffany Kershaw; and his son-in-law, Tim Kershaw, whom he affectionately called his “favorite son-in-law.” He is also lovingly remembered by his four sisters: August Harris, Mary Gardner (Romeo), Yolanda Brown, and Debra Harper Moyler (Edward). William was a proud uncle to many nieces and nephews and treasured his many extended family members and friends. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we rejoice in the legacy of love, faith, and integrity William leaves behind. He will be deeply missed, loved beyond words, missed beyond measure, and forever cherished.
