Virginia Chavis

Virginia Chavis, our beloved sister, aunt, cousin and friend, left her earthly vessel to transition to her spiritual reward on Thursday, December 31, 2020. She was 77 years old. Virginia born on September 30, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, the middle child of the late Derrill and Eular (Holmes) Chavis, Ginny, as she was fondly called by all of her friends and family, was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. She graduated from Dunbar HIgh School in 1961. Ginny found employment at the Department of Defense, Fort Meade, Maryland as a Personnel Security Specialist and retired after 36 years of dedicated service. Ginny joined Eastern Methodist Church on March 25, 1957, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Calvin P. Crosson. She remained an active member until God called her home, serving in various leadership roles, such as Church School Secretary, Church Secretary, Church Membership Chair, Worship Chair, and a Prayer Warrior, just to name a few. For over 30 years, Ginny held the distinct title of "Church Announcer" reading the church announcements most Sundays and when requested for other special services. Although Ginny did not have any biological children, she was a mother to many Eastern and Community children. Ginny enjoyed shopping and traveling with her family. She was an excellent cook making broccoli cornbread, ambrosia, apple pies, and sweet potato pies. Her favorite foods were fried chicken, stead fish, burned hot dogs, and sea food that she was not supposed to eat. Ginny was an active member of the Govans Red Hatters Chapter for many years. She leaves to mourn her loss and cherish her memory; her loving and devoted sisters, Velva Foster and Joyce Dawkins; two nieces, Marcia Davis and Lowand Green; her great nieces and nephews, Shavia Green, Taijah Davis, Vicent Dawkins, Garen and Gavante Green-Scott; her great-great nieces and nephews. Aniyah Payne, Colvin, Amirah and Alayiah Jones, Kaiden, Peyton and Ashton Green-Scott. She also leaves to cherish her memory, two cousins who were raised like her brothers, Thaddeus Holmes (Sharon) and Julius Banks (Yvette), a loving aunt, Bertina HOlmes, and two Godchildren, Tania and Nicole Bethea. Also left to cherish her memory are her close friends; Paula Marie Johnson, Michele Riggsbee and Lucy Whitworth, the three blind mice. Ginny also leaves to cherish her life and memory, a host of precious relatives, friends and neighbors, and her Eastern United Methodist Church family. Ginny was preceded in death by her loving parents, Derrill and Eular, and a devoted sister, Gloria Hester.
