Shirley Ann Banks

Shirley Ann Banks was born on December 29, 1946 and received her heavenly wings on Friday, June 15, 2018. Awaiting her in heaven are her parents, Thomas and Clara Tillman, Sr.; stepmother, Lillian Tillman; siblings, Caroline Brice, Ann Mines, Thomas Jr., Burton and Alberta Tillman. Shirley was affectionately known as “Tootie Pie,” “Fruit,” and “Granny,” by her loved ones. She was educated in the Richmond Public School System. At a young age, she married her childhood sweetheart David “Bubba” Banks, and from this 37-year union they had six children. She accepted Christ and joined Sharon Baptist Church in 1998, where she enjoyed helping with the community breakfast outreach. She was employed as a Plant Supervisor by Virginia Hospital Laundry for over 30 years. During her tenure, she provided job opportunities to many people, including all six of her children. Even though she hired you, if you acted up she would surely fire you. She said what she meant and meant what she said. Shirley had a passion for cooking, baking, sewing and feeding whomever entered her home. Anyone who sampled her cooking, always came back for more. Not only did she love cooking for others, she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to bake their favorite desserts. She relished traveling with her children on family vacations to Florida, Myrtle Beach and cruising to the Bahamas. Shirley had a love for the Washington Redskins and watching old western movies and wanted nothing to interrupt her daytime soap operas. She loved her children, grandchildren, and other family members, and they loved her right back. Her loving memories will be forever cherished by her children, Keith Banks, Sr. (Pamela), Kent Banks, Sr. (Charlette), David Banks, Jr. (Katrina), Linda Jennings (Charles), Michael Banks, Sr. (Shawnza), and Cathy McMillan (Darrell); 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild; step siblings, Alonzo, Benjamin and Valerie Hunter, Katrina Tillman and Denise Ferguson (Michael); uncles, Burton Robinson, Sr. and Fred Robinson; devoted sister-in-law, Delores Yarborough; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Among them her nieces, Tonya Allen and Carolyn Tillman, whom she loved as daughters. Heart of gold is what she had, always putting the needs of others before her own. Shirley lived a full life and has planted seeds of love and selflessness, which continues to reap a harvest that will carry on forever in the lives of everyone she touched. She will be greatly missed and never ever forgotten.
