Sarah Mae Epps

Sarah Mae Epps was born on March 30, 1931 to Rebecca and Moses Watson in Dale County, South Carolina. God sent an angel to bring her home on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from Johns Hopkins Hospital. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Epps, son, Wilbert Watson, and brother, Thomas Campbell. At an early age, Sarah accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in South Carolina. As a young lady, she received her education at Beaufort High School in South Carolina and later moved to Savannah, Georgia to work at a dry-cleaners. She later moved to New York and then eventually to Baltimore, where she met and married her husband William A. Epps. Together they raised five children. She had a desire to continue her Christian walk and became a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in the early 60's under the pastorate of the late Reverend George A. Crawley, Jr. Sarah was driven to better herself, family, and to share her love for people. Therefore, she continued her education, and received training as a certified nursing assistant in 1973. Sarah practiced as a certified nursing assistant at City Hospital, currently Bayview Hospital. She provided 20 years of quality care before retiring. Affectionately known to her children and friends as Mommie, Mama, Ma, Mother, Mother Sarah, Mother Epps, she offered an abundance of love for all. Sarah remained an active member of her community. Sarah was an advocate for equality, civil rights and fair health care for seniors. She especially enjoyed listening to the St. Paul Baptist Church Men's Choir. She was friendly and listened to many of the members of the congregation after Sunday services ended. She also provided volunteer services with the Senior Corps, where she was recognized for outstanding service in 2003. She volunteered at the Harford Senior Center by planning and facilitating various activities as a member of the events committee. She enjoyed walking and traveling frequently with family and friends. Sarah Epps attended the gym regularly, was an avid reader and also started crafting her own jewelry. She made and sold jewelry at the flea market, as well as at the senior center, where she had several loyal customers. She leaves behind to celebrate her life and legacy: her daughters, Joyce Holloway (James), Linda Epps, Paulette Epps, Wanda Epps-Dunham, step-daughters, Joann Smith, Sandra Fuller, god-daughter, Bernice Jennings, her two sisters Ethel Mae Gregg and Bessie Mae Ward, her brother Roy Watson (Jean), three sisters-in-laws, Alma D. Dargan, Dorthy Campbell, and Shirley Branch, two brothers-in-law, Harry Epps, James Epps (Elizabeth) of Keysville Virginia, five grandchildren, Juanita Bright (Ivan), Antoine Bailey, Aaron Bright, Williard Brogdon, Jr. and Wynter Curtis, seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Dow, Brandon Bailey, Arron Dow, Jordan Bailey, Princess Washington, Noah Dow and Gabriel Dow. James Holloway, Ivan Dow and Kenneth Pittman also held a special place in her heart, as well as her close friends, Gladys Bartee, Marion "Bea" Anderson, Mabel Hamilton, Louise Berry, Ruby Radcliff. She loved her cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends who will miss her dearly. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
