Roosevelt Lundy Jr.

Roosevelt (Rosie) Lundy Jr, age 71, of Richmond VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Rosie lived a life marked by devotion to family, a love of sports, service to others, and a commitment to teaching and mentoring others. He was born January 18, 1955, in Dinwiddie, VA to the late Roosevelt “Boodie” Lundy Sr. and Carrie (Taylor) Lundy. Rosie attended Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio, and graduated from Community High School in Richmond, VA. He went on to attend West Virginia University, where he graduated in 1980 (Lets go Mountaineers!!). During his time at WVU he helped establish the first youth soccer league, an early reflection of his lifelong love of sports and his gift for coaching teaching and mentoring young people. Rosie had two children, Roosevelt “Trey” Lundy III and Rebecca “Becky” Lundy. Becoming a father began another important chapter in Rosie’s life and a family that would later grow to include the grandchildren he so dearly loved. Following graduation from WVU, Rosie began his professional career at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he made history as the first African American head coach of the VCU RAMS men’s soccer team. As the head coach, he shared his love of the game while teaching, mentoring, recruiting, and developing his players both on and off the field. Rosie later transitioned into a career in law enforcement with the VCU Police Department. His commitment to teaching and mentoring remained an important part of his work as he served and protected the University community. During his tenure, he attained the rank of Corporal and served as a Field Training Officer, helping prepare and guide fellow officers. Rosie retired after 29 years of service at VCU and continued his law enforcement career at Virginia Union University (VUU), where he rose through the ranks of Sergeant to Lieutenant. He retired from VUU in 2019, ending his 39 years of public service. Away from work, Rosie was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and a loyal member of the Prince Hall Freemasons. He enjoyed listening to good music, vacationing at the beach, and simply having a good time. His faith was also an important part of his life. Rosie enjoyed reading his Bible and was a member of the Children of God Victory Tabernacle where he faithfully attended. Above all, Rosie cherished his family. He loved spoiling his grandchildren and being surrounded by family and friends. Following his mother’s passing he took the lead in organizing family reunions, bringing everyone together to reminisce, strengthen family bonds and ensure that the next generation knew and appreciated their family history. For Rosie, keeping the family connected and preserving those memories was an important part of his legacy. Rosie leaves to cherish his memory, his children Roosevelt “Trey” Lundy, III (Sara) and Rebecca “Becky” Lundy (Augustus), five grandchildren; his brother Zachary “Zach” Lundy; his three sisters Marquita Peebles, Eyvette Peebles (Shohn), and Andrea Harrison (Sean); a close family friend Opal Mosely and a host of extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Roosevelt Lundy Sr.; mother Carrie Lundy Spencer; his stepfather, Herman Spencer; stepmother Marie Hall Lundy; his brothers Reginald (Reggi) Lundy and Ricky Peebles. Rosie will be remembered for his devotion to family, his love of sports, his sense of humor and that unmistakable personality that made him uniquely Rosie. His presence, his laughter and the many memories he created will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, beginning at 11am at The Children of God Victory Tabernacle. Funeral services will begin at 1pm. Interment will be private.
