Prentiss Lee Doughty

PRENTISS LEE DOUGHTY, the son of the late Printess T. Doughty and Mildred Miles-Thornton was born in Accomack, Virginia on October 24, 1934. He was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. He married his childhood love in 1952, together they had eight daughters and raised seven, Kimberly passed away at the age of 4 months in 1962. He worked odd jobs as a young boy until he was hired as a Truck Driver hauling steel at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland. Daddy worked forty-four years and three months, only absent one day, before retiring in May 1997. During his early years Dad attended Ebenezer Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board. Daddy was a hard worker, and he took pride in his work. He was our provider and our protector. He was the disciplinarian in the home and when he called your name you could hear it a mile away, you couldn’t get there fast enough. It was important for him as a father of eight girls to instill in us Great Morals, Values, Manners and Respect. Although he was a very stern father, Daddy was a quiet man very laid back. He would sit at the window in the dining room for hours watching old western movies, the Orioles play baseball and the Ravens play football while drinking his Coke sodas. That’s what our dad called Living Life in the comfort of his home. He didn’t travel much, but he took the family reunions seriously, he would load up Old Betsy the pick-up truck and head on up the road. Everything was organized and in place from start to finish, those were some good times. Daddy loved to tell jokes, the joke about the bear shooting pool was his favorite, he would be laughing so hard, he had you laughing before the joke was fully told. He was affectionately known in the Pasadena community as “Gravy”. Daddy would talk to everyone wherever he would go and everyone knew that he had eight daughters, Proud Daddy he was. Every now and then we would hear Daddy singing some old tunes, oh yeah, he enjoyed singing. We would record him singing with our cell phone and he was fascinated by that device and he would say, “I never seen that before, that is cool”. Whenever Daddy was checking the oil level in the car, changing a flat tire or trying to repair a washing machine, he would stop us from playing so that we could watch and learn. He knew that we were not paying attention, but he kept on talking. Daddy knew that he would not always be around and he didn’t want his girls to depend on anyone!!!
