Naomi Esther Hopewell

Naomi Esther Hopewell, was born on August 26, 1909 to the late Edward D. Johnson and Fannie Burgess Johnson, in Howard County, Maryland. After a lengthy illness, she departed this life peacefully, at St. Agnes Hospital on Thursday, January 10, 2002. Naomi was born and raised in Howard County, Maryland. She received her education in the public school system of Howard County, Maryland. From her union with Richard Snowden, Naomi was blessed with a daughter, Frances. Her marriage to Roland Joyce was blessed by the birth of a son, Samuel. She was a loving and devoted mother to her children Frances and Samuel (Jimmy). She married George Henry Hopewell, a long-time member of Grace A.M.E. Church, on September 14, 1957 and was his loving companion until his death on December 11, 1985.` Naomi was a long-time, devoted member of her “beloved” Grace A.M.E. Church. She first joined Grace in 1928. She was an active worker and a former president of Steward Board #2; a member of the Fields Hayes Young Missionary Society; Foundation Club; Willing Workers, Elks Lodge, The Golden Age and Eastern Star. Naomi was very active in many other church activities until her health declined. Traveling and playing bingo were sources of pleasure until her illness prevented her from enjoying these activities. During her illness she especially loved visits from her family, church family and many friends. Naomi leaves to mourn: a loving and devoted daughter, Frances Johnson Williams; a faithful son, Samuel R. Joyce; one son-law Stanley Williams; three grandchildren, Phyllis Sharps, Fran Barron, Darryl Joyce and proceeding her in death Duan Joyce; six great-grandchildren, Aaron Gross, Stephanie Sharps, Michael Sharps, Carroll Burley, Jennifer Joyce, Omar Barnes; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.But such a tide as seems asleep, too full for sound and foam.When that which drew from out the boundless deep, turns again home.Twilight and evening bell, and after the dark!And may there be no sadness of farewell, when I embark;For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place the flood may bear me for,I hope to see my Pilot face to face when I have crossed the bar.Alfred Lord Tennyson
