Myrtle Irene Ellis

Myrtle Irene Ellis , daughter of the late Irene C. Morton and step -daughter of the late Moses Morton, was born on July 13, 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland. Myrtle ascended from her earthly life to her eternal life on Saturday, May 14, 2016. On January 2, 1947 Myrtle married Mark Y. Ellis and from this union Lynette Corriene was born Myrtle's beloved Mark preceded her in death in 1993. Myrtle was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. She grew up in the Govans area of Baltimore. Myrtle began her career as a private duty nurse and it was during this time while providing nursing care to enlisted officers she met her husband-to-be. Myrtle later moved on to a lengthy career in the Federal Government as a mail clerk with the U. S. Postal System where she retired in June 1989 after 24 years of dedicated service. Myrtle loved people and staying busy after retirement she became very active in various organizations. Her favorite was the Women 's Civic league where she chaired the Annual Flower Mart in May for several years. Myrtle was weekly participant at the Waxter's Senior Center Where she enjoyed arts and crafts, line dancing and exercise. She was a “ social butterfly.” Myrtle, a high soprano, loved singing. She was a member of the Senior choir of Mt Calvary AME and the Mighty Mass Choir of Payne Memorial AME. She also sang with fellow residents at Bewildered Green Senior Development where she raised from 1988 – 2013. In her later years, she was a member of the Beads of Wisdom Ministry at Mount Calvary AME Church Myrtle never had problem speaking her mind at any time. She was a strong and courageous woman throughout all her a life and she maintained that character until her last day. Over the past four years, the love Myrtle 's life Because her great-grandsons, Cohen and Mason. Myrtle was preceded in death by sister Sarah B. Riley. Myrtle leaves behind to celebrate her home going: devoted and loving daughter and son-in-law Lynette and Richard Smothers; son and daughter-in-law McKinley and Sandra Matthews; loving grandsons Richard and Marcus Smothers; grandson Ronald Mathews; granddaughter Tanya Nobles; six great grandchildren; nieces Camille Howell Patricia Patterson, Renee Riley; nephew William Riley and a host of other relatives and friends.
