Monica Evelyn Walker

Monica Evelyn Walker, affectionately known as Aunt Monica to her family and Moni to her close friends, was born in Portland, Jamaica on April 02, 1924 to the late George and Sara Deans. She was the youngest of her parents' twelve children. She was preceded in death by all her siblings. She departed this life on April 28, 2021, after a short battle with cancer. Monica lived and worked in Jamaica as a factory worker until the late sixties. She then made the decision to take a leap of faith and apply for a job through a Jamaican agency to work in the United States. She wanted to make a fresh start in a new place, she was forty-four years old at the time. In this new land she had no home nor family but she was fortunate to have the opportunity to journey to this new place with her dearest friend Ms. Daphne. Once she arrived in the States, she worked hard to build a very comfortable life for herself, she worked for three different families. The Kerish, the Eldistien, and the Solomons. Not long after, she was able to purchase her own home. While building her new life in the United States, she did not forget her extended family in Jamaica, she reached back to help bring her family to the United States so that they too could have a be1er life. The family you see before you today are the offspring of that extended family. Aunt Monica had no children of her own, but she unselfishly raised her niece Lorna (Marie) as her very own daughter. We are forever grateful and honored that God chose her to be our dear Aunt Monica. In 1973 she met and married the late Arthur Walker; they were married for over forty years. Aunt Monica retired in 2009 at the age of Eighty-Five. She was a member of Brown’s Memorial Baptist Church for over thirty years. She loved the Lord with all her heart and was always giving Him honor and praise; for all He had done for her and brought her through. Monica loved her family very much, and was always welcoming when we would stop by. Her door was always open, all were greeted with a warm smile and outstretched arms. She loved to laugh, and loved when family members and friends would tell her jokes and funny stories. She was also a wonderful cook and would never let you leave her home without a full stomach. Her dearest friend in the world was Ms. Daphne, whom she loved very much and would always say, and I quote, “No ma1er what’s going on Daphne and Dale will never leave me out.” Ms. Daphne and Dale, we her family appreciate the loving kindness you have shown her throughout the years. Everyone who knew Aunt Monica loved her; she was Honest, Kind, Gentle, Loving, Giving and Caring. She was a Pillar of Strength, Grit, Grace, Perseverance, and Endurance. Life at times was not easy for her but when the chips were down, and the storms of life would set in, and pressure was on every side, she was Courage Under Fire. AUNT MONICA, YOU WERE AMAZING!!! She leaves to mourn a host of nieces and nephews, along with their children, other relatives and her dear friends.
