Mildred E. Johnson

Mildred Elizabeth Thompson was born to the late Walter Thompson and Cora Molock Wongus on August 24, 1918 in Baltimore, MD. She was called home to be with the Lord on January 14, 2017. Throughout her life, Mildred valued education. Upon completing high school in Baltimore City, Mildred completed several career schools. Among them were Cortez Peters Business School and the Walters Academy. In her youth, Mildred met and married the late "Louis" Johnson. Unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce. Mildred was a very dignified, mild-mannered, sociable, and outgoing person. Mildred was a bit of a socialite, as she would attend a multitude of events in support of sororities, fraternities, social groups, and charitable organizations. Within her church home, she was a member of the St. Agnes Guild. Outside of her church, she was an active member of many social clubs including: Top Ladies of Distinction, The Variety Club and Red Hats Club, to name a few. She enjoyed the fulfillment of supporting charitable organizations, and was always supportive of others’ fundraisers and activities. Although Mildred had many hobbies, such as singing, sewing, crocheting, and traveling, she especially enjoyed social outings. Mildred loved to interact with other people, and she believed in living life to its fullest. Her most treasured outing was to regularly take her niece, Celestine, to hear the Morgan State Choir in concert. Mildred has been a long-time member of St. James Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Maryland. When her health allowed, she enjoyed spending time with her church family and enjoyed attending services in honor of the Lord. She frequented the barbeques and events held by church members, and avidly invited family members to attend functions within her church home. She enjoyed her time at St. James Episcopal Church and was actively involved until her health began to falter. Throughout her life, Mildred worked several jobs. In her most recent position, she worked for the Federal Government, where she retired from the Social Security Administration. In addition to her time in government service, Mildred was also a former print-commercial model, and for a time, she was also a substitute teacher for Baltimore City Public Schools. Throughout her life, she successfully sold Mary Kay, and worked other clerical jobs. Her two brothers preceded Mildred in death: Lester and James. Her dear friend, “Tony,” and her nephews, Maurice and “Junior” also preceded her in death. Mildred made many friends along the way and she will be deeply missed. She leaves to mourn: her niece, Celestine Tatum; great-nieces, Robyn Terrell (Lester), Angela Tatum and Alicia Tatum; great-nephews, Darnell Tatum and Maurice Thompson; cousins, Randolph and Diane Thompson and Ann Wongus; along with great-great nieces and nephews and a host of other friends and relatives.
