Mattie Mae Thomas Hazelwood

MATTIE MAE THOMAS HAZELWOOD was born December 25, 1932 in Columbia South Carolina, to Robert and Mattie Lois Thomas. She departed this life on February 21 2010.At an early age the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where they settled down on Low street, in East Baltimore. Mae, as she was called, attended Baltimore City public schools. She began her education at P.S. #116 on Aisquith Street, later attending P.S. #130 Booker T. Washington Junior High School, and finally #454 Carver Vocational High School where she attained skills in Industrial Sewing. After high school she went to work for London Fog. Mae also worked for Sun Cleaners as a presser for many years her sight began to fail. In 1960 Mae met the love of her life and future husband, Mr. Earl Joseph Hazelwood. The two were soon united in Holy Matrimony at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Together they shared many beautiful years of marriage until the Lord called Earl home in 2000. Mae then moved to Stadium Place apartments where she was reunited with several high school friends. She really enjoyed her independence at her new apartment. In her spare time she loved to cook, sew, and go on bus trips. Mae was baptized at an early age and attended First Apostolic Church on Caroline St. with her mother, sister and brothers. Later in life she became a member of the Love Faith and Deliverance Church of Christ under the pastoral ship of the late Bishop Jimmy Smith and the late David Hatchet. After Elder Hatchet's passing she decided to serve the Lord as church mother at her grandchildren's church, Purpose Driven Ministries. As time went by Mae's health began to fade, so of course I stepped in to give Mother the help and guidance she really needed, but she quickly informed me that I was the child, she was the parent and cautioned me to tread lightly, which I did. I know the Bible says to fear no one except God, but Mae sure gave me a run for my money!T o know Mae was to love Mae, and no one knew that better than her phone pals, Mrs. Shirley White, Shirley Liveston, and Shirley Megalson, Hattie Scott, Hattie Makel and Delores Watson.One of Mae's favorited saying was “I am A Winner” and yes she truly was!Left to cherish her memory and legacy are: her children, Bruce, Lauris, Reginald, Frank, and Cynthyia (Cassie and Earl Jr. preceded her in death); brother, Harford Thomas; sister, Minnie Avery; three first cousins, Larsteen Yow, Betty Baxter and James Baxter; a favorite niece, Minnie Fortune; twenty-five grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. She also leaves her extended family at the House of Refuge Church, Sister Debbie Burell, Mother Vernell Green and Evangelist Cheryl Black.
