Mattie M. Clea

Mattie Mae Hunter Clea began her beautiful journey of life on Saturday, October 1, 1927 and passed peacefully from her home into heaven eight-four years later on Saturday, 24 2012 She as the eighth child born to the blessed union of the late Josephine Floyd Hunter and Nathan Hunter. In November 1951, Mattie was united in holy matrimony to Isaac Clea and to her husband of thirty - four years were born five children. A dedicated and devout Christian, she united with the Saint Martin Church of Christ under the leadership of the Rt. Rev. Father P. H. Franklin, where she served faithfully as an usher and missionary.She later united with the Israel Baptist Church of Baltimore City on Christian experience. In the community, she a member of American Legion Northeastern Unit #285 and , in 1991, was recognized as a character member for successfully working towards promoting the programs of the American Legion auxiliary. She enjoyed sitting in front of her home and “Ms Mattie was known, respected and loved by all in the neighborhood and regular passerby. The kitchen was her favorite room in her home and it was from there that she prepared delicious “eat-in-and to-go” menus to feed family near and far and strangers on the street. Full-course meals were usually prepared when family arrived because she would say her “itchin' nose” had already told her someone was coming. There were no greater recipients of her unwavering love than her family. Her unconditional love extended far beyond her immediate family and embraced each and every family member. She had a magnetic personality and sweet spirit that drew people to her and a stranger was never a stranger for long. Her hobbies included canning vegetables and fruits and baking her legendary peach and apple cobblers for annual family and friends pig roast. She loved fashion and enjoyed shopping, especially for occasions where she stut her smile and be outfitted from hat to heels. Almost as enjoyable as her love for cooking, was her love for traveling when her health permitted. Another favorite pastime was playing the numbers and winning , which she ofter did and no matter the winnings, she was always grateful and often shared her “good fortune. Mattie leaves behind a rich legacy of bearing the unbeatable – surviving radical surgery to remove a breast when there were few survivors at the time; reaching the unattainable – living for countless years with health issues that shortened the lives of others; winning at the impossible – challenging injustices and achieving legal victories; and expecting the unthinkable – interceding as your personal prayer warrior, taking any setback or situation facing her her family or friends to the Lord in prayer. She is preceded in death by her husband, Isaac; her parents, Nathan and Josephine Hunter; eight siblings, Sarah, Louise, Richard, William, Hattie, John, Mary and Josephine; and a daughter, Lorraine, born stillborn. In addition to her sister Harriet White of Baltimore, she is survived by four children: Carl Melvin Clea, Isaac Alfred Clea (Lori), Marion Willene Clea and Wayne Matthew Clea (Keisha), all of Baltimore three grandchildren, Chantel Clea Goins ( Lafayette), Isaiah Morris, Brianna Clea and Joshua Clea all of Baltimore; Stepchildren, Ellarine Dawson, Sammy Curtis (Jean) and Grace Thomas; goddaughter, Veronica Monroe; sixteen grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
