Mary E. Butler

Mary Elizabeth Butler came into this world April 8, 1913, born in Annapolis, Maryland to Eva and Harvey Hutton. Mary was the first of two children. Her late brother was James Hutton of Annapolis, Maryland. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic school of Annapolis, Maryland. Mary, known as “Tiny” to her cousins Mathilda, Eva and Virginia of Annapolis. Mary was raised by her grandparents, Virginia and James Diggs, also of Annapolis.She met the love of her life, the late Nathaniel Butler, Sr., during one of his musical performances in Annapolis. She later married him in October of 1928. They decided to live in Baltimore City. From this union came six child: four sons, Nathaniel, Norman, William, Albert, and two daughters, Barbara Forbes and Helena Bailey. Her membership at Ebeneezer A.M.E. in south Baltimore has been over 70 years, where she grew in the spirit of Christ.Dearie, better known to her family, loved to cook, loved to garden and her many hats. She devoted a lot of her time in the kitchen, whipping up many of her delights for her family, friends and neighbors. She was a true humanitarian, and would do anything to help you. Her arms were always open to anyone who needed her. Her love for others graced everyone she knew.Mary was a very private person, however she had a long extended family, embracing her children’s friends and many others. Her fondest memories were of her family. She truly loved and cherished all of the many members of her extended family, however there would be no conversation to family, friends and neighbors without speaking about her special love for Danielle, Candace and Calvin, who were also the love of her life. Dearie received her much earned rest with God on January 17, 2003. Her last thoughts were that her children should care for each other and their children. She also believed that family came first.She leaves to cherish her memories: four sons, two daughters, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, a niece, four nephews, and a host of relatives, friends, and neighbors. She was a member of DAVA (Disabled American Veteran Auxiliary) of the state of Maryland Unit # 17. Let us give thanks for the beautiful life of Mary E. Butler. One of her favorite expressions was “Keep on Living”.
