Martha Terry

Mrs. Martha Terry, daughter of the late George and Minnie Williams, was born July 26, 1910 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She departed this life on Friday, February 15, 2008 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was the last of fourteen siblings.Martha attended Mary Potter High School in Oxford, North Carolina. Upon graduation from school, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland and lived with her oldest sister, Annie Williams Brooks. She met and married Lonnie Lee Terry. To this union, three children were born; Gloria Terry Stanley, James Terry and Lonnie Terry. Gloria and James preceded her in death.Martha was a faithful and loyal member of Zion Baptist Church. She exemplified the Christian principles of womanhood. In the Old Testament of the Bible, the Book of Proverbs, Chapter 31, verses 10 through 31, describe the traits of a noble woman“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her work bring her praise at the city gate.”Martha served as Secretary for the Progressive Paragons, a social club with a focus on travel. She traveled to various states and Canada as a member of this club. Martha and her friend, Onnie, often spent their time together discussing the fun they had on various trips. Martha exhibited a special gift of persuasion. She was able to entice her friends and family to support her club by purchasing tickets for trips. When trying to sell tickets to others for trips, Martha’s famous quote was, “If you do not go this year you may not be here next year.”Martha was known for her dinner parties. She was an excellent cook and never grew tired of serving as hostess for her family and many friends.Martha leaves to mourn her loss; a son, Lonnie Terry; four grandsons, Calvin, Stanley Jr. (wife Lorain), Larry Stanley, Jimmy Sennette Terry, Lonnie Terry; a granddaughter, Sabrina Terry; three great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Calvin Stanley Sr.; a daughter-in-law, Cornelia Robertson Terry; a goddaughter; Lisa Morris; a godson, Roy Davis and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
