Marie Mercer

Marie E. Mercer, affectionately known as “Nee Nee” was born on October 21, 1941, in Wicomico, Virginia to the late Onie Gaskins and Alexander Lee. She peacefully received her wings on July 20, 2026, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her siblings Richard, Mary Ellen, Spencer and Alexander. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving siblings, Hannah and Robert. Marie was educated at Julius Rosenwald High School in Northumberland, Virginia. She later relocated to Baltimore, where she married Floyd Mercer and lovingly raised her family. Following the passing of her husband, Marie remained the cornerstone of her family, continuing to serve as a devoted mother to her seven children. A proud grandmother and great-grandmother of 21, Marie found immense joy in her family. She loved spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured every moment spent with them. She especially enjoyed hosting family dinners, planning trips to Ocean City and traveling on cruises and international vacations with her children and extended family. Marie dedicated over 40 years of service as a nanny and housekeeper for the Sweeney family, where she became a deeply cherished and integral part of their lives. Even in retirement, that bond remained strong. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Kathleen, Eileen and Rosewin, along with their children, for the love, care and continued support they showed Marie, including faithfully visiting her when she could no longer travel. A woman of steadfast faith, Marie began her spiritual journey in the 1970s and became a devoted member of New Trinity Church under the leadership of Bishop Norton. For more than 50 years, she remained faithful in her service, including over four decades serving as President and Treasurer of the Usher Board Ministry. She also served under Pastor Dabney, with whom she shared a warm and playful friendship. Marie shared an extraordinary bond with her sister-in-law, Clince Lee, whom she leaves to cherish her memory. Though related by marriage, their relationship was one of true sisterhood. For over 60 years, they were best friends, confidants and unwavering sources of love and support for one another. Marie will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her strength, and her deep abiding faith. She leaves to cherish her memory her seven children: Beverly (Charles), Frances, Lori (Gilbert), Floyd (Carol), Billy, Robert Sr. and Tina; her siblings: Robert (Mamie) and Hannah; her ten loving grandchildren: Otis (Cherita), Latisha, Shena, Antione, Danya (J’Sherre), Sante’ (Emmanuel Jr.) Robert Jr., Arcadia, Nickolas and Winter, and her eleven greatgrandchildren: Rashawd, Ahmad, Shawn, Julian, London, Paris, Omari, Tre, Carter, Edyn and Elijah. Marie is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, friends and church family, all of whom were touched by her life.
