Louburttie Tubman

Louburttie Tubman, daughter of the late, John W. Bland & Carrie Dingle was born on October 3, 1941 in Washington, DC. She married the late Charles A. Tubman, but later divorced. She departed this life on October 9, 2024, surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness. Preceded in death brothers Frankie, Jean, & Jonnie Bland, son Maurice Tubman, son-in-law Lemon Cobbs, & great-great-granddaughter Aurbree Palmer. Mama Lou was a determined single mother who didn’t settle for less. She went from working at Crown’s Grocery Store to working as an assistant nurse at John’s Hopkins Hospital. During that time, she attended night school and earned her GED. Mama Lou would later advance to become an OR Technician at the Weinberg Operating Room where she dedicated 40 years of her life. Mama Lou was known for her expertise, her mentorship, her determination, & leadership. She became one of the best OR Technicians at JHH & was requested by doctors. Every person she trained said, “Ms. Lou’s tough love pushed them to be the best.” One may have thought Mama Lou was mean, but she was a strong woman with standards. Mama Lou later retired in 2007. Mama Lou was a loving person who had a heart for people. She would take people into her home & make them feel like part of the family. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, wisdom, & unwavering sense of humor. She taught life lessons about resilience, strength, & independence. She was a very neat person who could do anything! Often going to bed late, because she cooked & cleaned all night; waking up early mornings, breakfast on the table, getting her children ready for school without a hair out of place. Mama Lou liked to be around her family, she loved to smile & laugh. She always made our home feel warm and cozy. Mama Lou was a longtime member of Highway Christian Church on Homewood Avenue. She was the president of the Women’s Auxiliary. She loved to study the word of God and often attended bible study. She was a member of the senior adult choir & women’s choir. She loved to worship & sing songs of praise. Louburttie leaves to mourn her loving sister Eunice Carter, two daughters Valerie Coney Cobbs & Yvonne Palmer, son in law Darnell Palmer, two goddaughters Towanda Bradley & Tamiaka, brother- & sister-in-law Joseph & Thalia Tubman, her cherished great-grandchildren Ronald Coney Jr, Maurice Jamal Tubman, Jabria Randall (Devon Braddy), Jade Randall, Patrick Palmer, Demonte Palmer, Darmedrick Palmer, Kanira Dickerson, Kiara Clark & a host of great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
