Linwood C. Nobles

Linwood C. Nobles, son of the late Joe and Dollie Nobles, was born on October 10, 1939 in New Bern, North Carolina. Linwood attended public schools in New Bern, North Carolina and Carver Vocational Technical School in Baltimore, Maryland. Linwood left school and proudly served our country by joining the US Army in 1963. During his service in the Army, he received 3 service medals.When Linwood returned from Vietnam, he joined the crew of United Airlines in 1967 at the Baltimore Washington International Airport. In that same year his daughter Towanda was born, his daughter Sharon was born the following year. Linwood married his loving wife, Sarah Lee Birden, on October 16, 1978.Linwood remained a loyal and trusted employee of United until his retirement in 1997. He maintained very close relationships with many of the gentlemen he worked with, and he will be missed by them all. Linwood’s retirement was short-lived as he went on to provide transportation service for residents of a senior rehabilitation center in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Linwood enjoyed driving for the center. He often shared afternoon lunches and conversations with his late uncle, Charles Yates, another driver for the home.Sarah provided licensed child-care services to many children over a 10-year period and Linwood was her trusted helper. The children referred to him as Grandpa. “Pop-Pop”, as he was known by his grandchildren, was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a strict disciplinarian yet had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, shooting pool, dancing with his nieces and granddaughters and attending social gatherings with friends and relatives.Linwood always had a love for horticulture; which showed in the 30-year transformation of the landscape of the home he shared with his wife Sarah. Linwood could always be found outside pruning trees, planting flowers, cutting grass and “moving earth”. His daughters always wondered why he would move dirt from one side of the yard to the other. They have since found out first hand the reason…gardening is soothing to the soul. “Lenny” was also a valued friend with strong relationships that spanned decades. The recipients of his love and friendship were fortunate to have him in their lives.Linwood C. Nobles departed this life and joined his late brother Christopher Nobles on November 20, 2009. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Sarah Nobles, two daughters; Towanda Nobles, and Sharon Nobles-Guy; three brothers, Marvin Nobles, Sr., Erskine Nobles. Sr., Joe Nobles, Jr., two sisters, Emma Clark and Deborah Nobles-McDaniel; two aunts, Cleopatra Cook, and Doris Sumner; two uncles Rudolph Nobles and Hugh Sumner; four grand-daughters, Ashley Nobles, Casey Morris, Kelsey Morris, Erica Guy and one son-in-law, Eric Guy. Linwood has sisters and brothers-in-law that he held dear to his heart, Ervin McDaniel, II, Milton Clark, Jr., Barbara Nobles, Martha Nobles, Carlton Birden, Barbara Birden, Martha Bell, Ida-Mae Davis, Sam Birden, and Ben Birden. Linwood had a host of caring relatives and friends that will also feel the loss of the light he displayed so brightly.
