Joseph L. Booker

Joseph Leroy Booker, 67 passed away on Saturday, June 11 2016 at his home in the arms of his loving wife. He was born on January 2, 1949 in Columbus, Ohio to Morris and Louise Booker. He was known as “Booka” to family and friends, most people called him Lee, which is short for Leroy. He was a lover of old black and white movies as well as westerns and documentaries. He was a huge history buff; Lee was definitely one of those people who knew a little bit about everything. Lee always had a passion for learning and reading. His first job was working as an assistant librarian in the Columbus Metropolitan Library. He enjoyed reading and collecting comic books of his favorite superheroes, Mad Magazine, and other literary classics. You could catch Lee strolling down the street,walking to the store, or just taking a lap around the block. He loved being at home with his family, chilling in the basement watching the History Channel. Lee grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from East High School in 1967, after which he attended The Ohio State University for one year before enlisting in the United States Armed Services. Lee joined the Army in 1968 where he served for 11 years. He was stationed in Korea for several active years and he retired from the military in 1980, achieving the rank of Sergeant. Lee began working for C & P Telephone Company in 1980 as a dispatch clerk. Over the next two decades he would be promoted several times to the position of maintenance administrator. He retired in 2007 after 27 years of service. Lee married Elease Barnes in 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland. The were happily married for 46 years and raised Michael and Glenna. Lee is survived by his wife Elease and his children Michael (Annie) Jackson and Glenna (Andrew) Booker-Johnson; his sisters Carol Kuthrell, Nancy Barnes and Janice Booker; his grandchildren Sierra, Michael Jr, Antonio Tarae, Adrianna, Malaysia and McKinley; and his great-grandchildren Kirk, Zanyiah, Kirsten and Kristian and many other relatives. Lee was preceded in death by his parents Morris and Louise Booker.
