John Richard Biggs

John Richard Biggs, affectionately known as “Pumpkin,” peacefully departed this life at his home in Richmond, Virginia, on August 4, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on January 29, 1944, in Halifax County, North Carolina, he was the beloved son of the late Ernest Biggs Sr. and Lutisha Solomon Biggs. John was the third of four children and was raised in the close-knit community of Scotland Neck, NC. There, he attended local schools and proudly graduated from Brawley High School. After completing his education, John journeyed north to New York in search of opportunity and a brighter future. It was there that he found more than just a career—he found love. On November 25, 1967, he married the love of his life, Nettie. Together they shared 57 beautiful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and enduring companionship. From their union, they were blessed with a cherished daughter, Lakisha Biggs-Alexander, who brought immense pride and joy to John’s life. John devoted many years to his career at Gemco Ware, where he served as a Shipping Supervisor in Freeport, Long Island. Known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and warm spirit, he left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike before his well-earned retirement. To know John was to know quiet strength, steadfast love, and unwavering dedication to his family. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life—sharing stories, spending time with loved ones, and seeing his grandchildren grow. His gentle demeanor and kind heart were gifts to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. John leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. He is survived by his devoted wife Nettie, his children, Lakisha Biggs-Alexander (son-in-law Nugent Alexander), Sharon Biggs and John Biggs Jr., his treasured grandchildren Syenna and Nathaniel Alexander, Markus Hocker Sr., great grandson, Markus Hocker, Jr., his beloved sister Hattie Brown, and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing that John’s spirit lives on in the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the family he so deeply cherished. Rest well, Daddy, Papa and Uncle Pumpkin. You will forever remain in our hearts.
