Jeanette Parsons Spencer

Jeanette P. Spencer, daughter of the late William Henry Parsons and Mary Ola Pinkett, was bon on July 8, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. God took her home on April 7, 2012. She was of nine children and the last surviving one until she was called home to Him. Her mother’s sister and her husband, the late Dr. Charles Chipman and Jeanette Chipman (sister of her mother), the latter she was named after, raised her from the age of three years old when they were unable to have children of their own. They resided in Salisbury, Maryland and were prominent educators and active members of their community. She would go back to be with her parents and siblings on holidays and summer vacations. She had a twin brother who passed away forty years ago. She received her education at Virginia State University where she obtained a Bachelors degree and went on to receive her masters in English at Temple University. She began her career as a Home Economics Teacher in the Baltimore City Public School System, and then became a Guidance Counselor. She retired after thirty years as Director of Guidance in the Baltimore City Public School System. After her retirement from this system she worked pat-time for several years as a guidance counselor at the Community College of Baltimore. She married the late James Spencer on December 29, 1945 and from their union two children were born, Sherrill and Wendy. It was a wonderful, loving marriage of forty years. Jean as she was fondly called, was a member of the AKA Sorority, and an active member of The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin for greater than fifty years. She had a passion for education, life, music, broadway shows, and her AKA dances and other social affairs, and most of all her family. She fully enjoyed her life and everyone knew that she was always busy, and always willing to lend a helping tireless hand to others in need. She had numerous friends and will always be remembered as an optimistic, warm, giving, caring and loving person, and everyone will remember her beautiful smile. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, godmother, aunt and friend. She leaves behind to mourn with wonderful memories: her daughters, Sherrill Rich and D. Wendy Spence-Suprynowicz; son-in-law, Dr. Frank A. Suprynowicz; grandsons, Aaron Rich and Kenneth Rich; granddaughter, Shannon Rich; great-grandson, Andre Murphy; goddaughter and niece, Gloria Mannes; nieces, Virginia Day, Debra Davis, Edwina McKenzie, Arline Berkley, Ann Hall, Elizabeth Ruffin and Wilsey Carlin; nephews, William Day and Ronald Roebuck; and very close family friend of numerous years, Deverne Coleman and family whose children called her “Aunt Jean;” and as well as other numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews as well as loving friends. We all have been blessed to have known her.
