James Hillard Williams

James Hilliard Williams, Sr., was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina to the late Edward and Sophie Williams. He was the baby of the family. Eight siblings preceded him in death. His brothers were Vonnie, Hugh, Issac, and Simon Williams, and his sisters were Carrie Brothers, Pocahontas Banks and Mary E. Williams.At an early age he sought for Christ and attended Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He became a faithful and active member of the Central Church of Christ for approximately 20 years, until his illness.His formal education was obtained in the Pasquotank County Public Schools; he worked at the Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia before moving to Baltimore.James, fondly known as “Jamie” married the love of his life, his devoted wife of 62 years, Elizabeth (Lizzie). From that union were born their beloved children, James H. Williams (Chardell Kern), Wendy Lanier (Melvin, Sr.-deceased), Deborah Turrentine (Kenneth) of Mocure, North Carolina, Michael E.Williams-deceased, Sophie Williams and Tammi Taylor. He loved this family and always encouraged them saying, “don’t forget to pray,” “Take care of yourself,” and “love one another,” He also admonished them saying “don’t worry yourself, I’m alright”, treat others the way you would want to be treated and stay together.James worked at several companies in Baltimore; Bond Bakery, Domino Sugars, American Standard, and her retired from Montebello State Hospital after 25 years of services. His favorite pastimes ere reading the newspaper or watching the news on television and talking about politics and current events. He was a humanitarian-warm, caring, compassionate, he always tried to help people and take care of them. He received awards and citations as a founding member of the Council 92 AFSCME, AFL-CIO. He served as president of Local #477, and sat on the executive board of Local #1694. Even after retirement, people called constantly wanting his representation and advice.He leaves to cherish his fond memories his wife, his children and his 11 grandchildren; Melvin, Jr., Kenisia, Che’, Bryan, Makeyta, Monique, Marcus, Brandon, Craig, Tony and Trenton; 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
