Helen M. Hughes

Helen M. Hughes, of Baltimore, entered Heaven's gates on January 5, 2019. She was born to the late Joseph Brooks and Pearl Williams on June 21, 1942. Helen affectionately called Numie by family and friends, was a loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, wife, who loved Jesus Christ and her family. Her early years were spent at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. Where she was baptized and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. Her faith in God never faltered , continuing to practice her Christian beliefs as a member of Southern Baptist Church. She was educated in Baltimore City Public Schools and Frederick Douglas High School in west Baltimore, She married the love of her life. Herbert and their 50+ year union was blessed with two living children, Herbert and Jeanell. Helen was proudly independent, resourceful and hard working. She often recounted how at 14 years old, she began working in Hooper Restaurant on the corner of Charles& Fayette. She loved keeping in touch and maintaining close ties with the former c0-workers. From her early days at Hamburger’s Department Store & Maryland General to Equitable Bank and the position from which she retired at Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Helen had dozens of adoring colleagues and genuine friends. Giving to others and family and friends were Helen's passion & Delight. She enjoyed hosting gatherings, big small, and capturing pictures of each moment to add to her epic collection of photos. The doors to her home were always open, a talented cook, she was happiest when family and friends gathered at her dining room table for a meal she prepared. She took great pride in being from Baltimore. Over the years . When she would travel, she always relished returned to her home in Baltimore. But no role was more important to Helen than wife-mother-grandmother. She selflessly filled the lives of her husband, son, daughter and grandkids with unwavering love and support, an unmatched amount of nurturing. Unparalleled devotion and irreplaceable guidance and advice. She is predeceased by her parents; daughter, Yvette Nadine; brothers, Joseph Brooks and Bobby Murray and sister Catherine Kent. Her legacy endures as she leaves to honor her spirit: husband Herbert; devoted children Herbert B. (Patrice Dionne) & Jeanell (Marc Wilson); II (Carrie), Jeanell (NaTarsha) & Bouvier Rashawn; great grandson Christopher, sister Evelyn Brooks; best friend Sarah Smith and a host of godchildren , nieces nephews, cousins and dear friends.
