Gwendolyn Mae

GWENDOLYN MAE, daughter of Edward and Mary Custis, was born August 26, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland. She tok her last breath on October 28,2016, in Sinai Hospital. Gwendolyn was known to many as Gwen or Gwennie. Her mother was in labor for seven days awaiting her arrival. She wanted to enter into this world when she was ready. After a long fight with her illness, wanting to give up at times, God showed her he wasn’t ready for her yet. Gwen acknowledged she needed God by wanting to be baptized. After graduating from Patterson High School in 1971, Gwen went on to work several jobs. She worked as a customer service rep in The Resorts Casino in Atlantic City, a telephone operator for C & P Telephone Company, a bartender at Wooden Nickels, a cook at Pearl Stone Conference & Retreat Center, and then a care provider for one of her special friends, Eugene Snead. She was a kind-hearted person. On the other hand, she could curse you out without even blinking. Gwen was always willing to give of herself to help others even when she was not feeling well. If you needed assistance from any government agency, she would know who to refer you to and help you fill out the paperwork. In her earlier years, she enjoyed partying. Gwen would be the entertainment for the party, even when you didn’t want her to be. Some other things she enjoyed doing were going shopping, watching television, going to the movies, and reading. She once attended the Planet of the Apes movie marathon at the old Hippodrome Movie Theater for ten hours. One of her favorite authors is J. D. Robb. Gwen had no children but everyone knew her child was man’s best friend, Max. Who is missing her, too? When she couldn’t get out to walk him, she would call you on the phone stating, “I need you to walk, Max”. We want Gwen to still be here but we cannot be selfish because she is at peace with no more pain. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest. Gwen leaves to mourn: her parents, Edward and Mary Custis; two brothers, John and Kevin; three sisters, Jacqueline, Linda, and Karen; two brothers-in-law, Martin and Anthony; five aunts, Nora, Helen, Arlene, Carolynann, and Regina; one uncle, William; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
