Gracie Anne Pulley

Gracie Anne (Smith, Fleming) Pulley was born on March 25,1937 in Lunenburg, Virginia. She was the oldest daughter of Dorothy Gaines Smith. She was affectionately called Shirley because she had curly locks of hair like Shirley Temple. She shared a lifelong, close-knit relationship with her other nine siblings: Mitchell, James, Quincy, Erie, Curtis, Lorraine, Mary, Evelyn, Brenda and Beatrice. She was preceded in death by her mother Dorothy, husband, James Pulley, sons: Vincent and Lloyd, a sister Mary and brother, James Love. Gracie attended Turner Station Elementary School and graduated in 1956 from Sollers Point High School. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age and attended the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. This was the family church because Rev. Shelton Fleming was the senior pastor. She met and married Ollie H. Fleming and six children were born from this union: Cathy, Vincent, Ronnie, Louis, Lesa and Lyndora. Like all of her daughters who followed in their mother's footsteps, Gracie too made her living in the health care profession. She was an X-ray technician at Sinai Hospital when her first child Cathy was born. She also worked at John Hopkins and at Church Home Hospital in the Dietary department. Later in life, Gracie continued to serve as a private nurse to Bernice Hoffberger. In 1979 Gracie was united in marriage to James Edward Pulley by the late Dr. Alfred C.D. Vaughn, Pastor of Grace Memorial Baptist Church. They continued as husband and wife until James was called from labor to reward on January 26, 2005. Their romance, love and life were a clear witness that second times can be better. Gracie and James happily enjoyed the best of life. They were never very far from one another; and it was difficult to see one and not the other. Later in life, Gracie joined the First Abyssinia Baptist Church with her daughter Cathy under the competent and dynamic leadership of Bishop Anthony R. Williams, Senior Pastor and his wife Rev. Dr. Kathie T. Williams, Pastor. The life and legacy of Gracie involved a deep and passionate devotion to her family and friends; and like her mother, she knew the ingredients for a good time. Gracie went home after a short illness while occupying a residence at Citizens Care Center in Harve de Grace, Maryland. She leaves behind, a village to cherish her memory, ponder her wisdom and reflect on a life well spent in service to others in the healthcare profession, including her Aunt Bertha, her sisters and brothers, her children, grand and great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, two devoted stepsons: Spanky and Michael Pulley along with sons and daughters-in-law's, as well as several devoted friends
