Goldon Byrd

Goldon Byrd III (Jackie/Goldie), son of Goldon Byrd, Jr. and Annie Martin, was born on September 28, 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on August 20, 2003.He met and later married Rosa Louise Daniels on March 20, 1970.Goldon attended and graduated from Bates High School in 1964. He served in the armed services from 1966-1968. During his service, he was stationed in Pusson, Korea. He graduated from cosmetology school earning a Barber Certification. That’s why he always looked so sharp. “I’m tougher than rooster puke…”. As he would always say. He worked for and retired from Joseph B. Seagram’s after twenty-five years of service. Soon after, he became the family’s sugar daddy by working at Domino’s Sugar until he had to take medical retirement.Goldon leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Rosa Byrd; brothers, Roland and Eugene Byrd; sons, Robert Byrd and Tony Winegard; daughters, Lisa V. Byrd and Linda Shields; niece and nephews, Carlton, Marlon and Karen Byrd; son-in-law, Kenneth E. shields; grandchild, Tyler Shields; godchildren, Shelby Gables and Montavia Barnes; close friend and caregiver, Stephanie Neale; a host of loving relatives and friends.To know him was to love him…as his license plate has always read. He loved everyone. He is the Motown Man! He was a loving husband, devoted Dad, trustworthy friend and reliable co-worker. He had a smile that lit up the room wherever he went. He loved music, children, dancing, shining his car and socializing with his friends, with a cigarette and a drink in his hands. He loved Fred Sanford, James Brown, Boney James, the Golden Girls and Delaware Park. You knew when he entered a room, for he was the 6’ 2”, sharp dressed, sweet smelling man with the perfect smile. The number of breaths we take does not measure life, but by the moments that take our breath away. That was Godly. You never wanted to get into a conversation with Goldie, because his mind was always made up, and he had the last word.Understand! Understand!The unfortunate loss of his youngest son was the death of him. Goldie never recovered from this loss. Today he will be buried with his son.
