Geraldine H. Horne

Geraldine Hayes Horne was born on January 10, 1940, to the late Junius Hayes II and Rosa T. Hayes of Richmond. Virginia. Geraldine completed her primary education in the Richmond, Virginia public school system. She graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School on June 13, 1958. After 30 years of service Geraldine retired from the United States Post Office. After her retirement, she continued to serve on the Credit Union of Richmond (formerly Richmond Postal Credit Union) Board of Directors until 2017. She also served as the First President of the Retirees Local Union 199. Geraldine was featured in Richmond Times Dispatch for her continued work as a parking deck attendant for Richmond Metropolitan Authority. Geraldine has three beautiful children, one stepdaughter, five grandchildren and one great- grandson who affectionately called her Nana. She loved spending time with her children and their families. She especially enjoyed visits and phone calls from her grandchildren. When Geraldine was not filling her home with love and warmth, she could be found spending time with her late husband, children, grandchildren and friends. She loved concerts, musicals, watching sports and playing Pokeno with the “Five Friends”. She traveled locally on church sponsored trips and abroad with her late husband and friends. She enjoyed water aerobics with her retirement group. Geraldine also loved taking care of her flowers and plants in her home and tending to her garden. In fact, she would get excited when her white Orchid and Calla Lilly bloomed. Geraldine was a faithful woman who loved the Lord, her family, church and community. As a child, she was nurtured at All Souls Presbyterian Church where she attended church and served in various ministries. She remained a dedicated member. In 2017, she became an Elder in the church. Geraldine learned how to use Zoom so she could continue to worship with her church family throughout the pandemic. Geraldine was a great friend to many. As a youth, she established lifelong friendships. The four friends she met as a child in Jackson Ward affectionately referred to themselves as the “Five Friends”. Then, there were the four “Golden Girls”, her friends from the post office, and a host of other friends who loved her. Those who knew her will remember Geraldine for her humility, kindness, fun spirit, infections smile and the sound of her laughter. On November 5, 2022, Geraldine gained her wings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Junius Hayes II and Rosa T. Hayes; her husband, Charles B. Horne; her brothers Junius “Butch” Hayes III and Douglas A. “Pee Wee” Hayes; brothers-in-law, Vance Horne (the late Francine) and William “Billy” Horne. Geraldine leaves to cherish her memory three children, Darrell Jackson, Gregory Jackson (Renee) and Wanda Jackson; one stepdaughter, Charletta Horne-Tanner; five grandchildren, Ricky Jackson, Seth Jackson, Gregory Jackson, Jr., Cameron Jackson and Monica Jackson; one great-grandson, Ricky Jackson; one sister, Barbara Wilborn; one brother, Michael Hayes; one brother-in-law, retired Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Horne; one sister-in-law, Willia Horne Cooper (Jack); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and life-long friends.
