Geneva O. Norris

Geneva Odell Barrett Norris, was one of four children born November 1, 1933 to the late William in Queen Barrett in Richmond, Virginia. On November 20, 2001, God sent His angel to Geneva with gentle fingers and sweetly carried her from labor to reward. Geneva was educated in the Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School with a major in Cosmetology. Geneva confessed Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and remained faithful to her belief in God’s goodness, grace and power, until He called her home. She joined Fifth Baptist church in Richmond, Virginia as a child. She married the late James Norris and they moved to the Mount Winans community in Baltimore, Maryland in the late 1950’s where they enjoyed worshiping as a family at the Bethany Baptist Church. From their union, two beloved sons were born James Jr., and Erick L. Norris. In the 1960’a Geneva and James moved to the community of Grove Park where for more than 30 years they continued to participate actively in the nourishing and development of their sons. Geneva was highly regarded and respected by her sons’ peers and her neighbors. She served as mom, big sister, and confidant to many. She worked at Carr Lowrey Glass Company until she retired in March 1993. Throughout her entire life, her interest and talents led her to the profession of cosmetology where she enjoyed creating unique hairstyles and taking care of her many clients’hair. She remained a loyal member of the Bethany Baptist Church until her health no longer permitted her active participation in church activities. She enjoyed her spiritual experiences and fellowships at Bethany. Geneva was a loving and kindhearted person always willing to help when needed. She was happiest serving God, and enjoyed comradery with her family. She possessed a radiant smile that was contagious and felt by all that came in contact with her. Geneva leaves to cherish her memory: two loving and devoted sons, James, Jr., and Erick: one loving and devoted sister, Mildred Harris; one daughter-in-law, Michelle; one granddaughter, Aleisha; one brother –in-law, Henry Norris of Richmond, Virginia; a faithful friend, Stephanie Bailey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loving neighbors.
