Evelyn Thompson

Evelyn Roberta Thompson, daughter of the late Robert Lee Thompson and the late Alice Elizabeth GreshamThompson was born on May 9, 1926. On Saturday, February 24, 2007, she was called home to be with the Lord. “Bay May” or “May May,” as she was affectionately called, received her education at the historic Beverly Allen School in West Point, Virginia. At an early age she joined and was baptized at Mount Nebo Baptist Church. She married James Harvey and from this union had one daughter - Alice Jean. Later she married Reuben Edwards. Evelyn made her home in Baltimore, Maryland where she would be near other family members who had relocated from Virginia. Evelyn loved to do many things- one of which was sewing. She was an accomplished seamstress. She could make clothes without using a pattern and her alterations always resulted in wonderful new creations. She loved to dress well and classy. Her wardrobe reflects her timeless good taste in clothing, hats, shoes and handbags. Bay May had a flair for entertaining. Whether the affair was large or small, she enjoyed planning, decorating, setting up and hosting parties. She was an excellent cook, delighting guests with mouthwatering dishes and delicacies. Her talents made weddings, family reunions, the Tenant Association activities at Bolton North and other events truly special occasions. She was a crab connoisseur - bring ‘em on - the bigger the better. In 1961, Evelyn went to work for the Grempler Family. Although the Gremplers were her employer, she became a part of the family. She assisted in raising the children and grandchildren. She had the pleasure of a 45+-year friendship with the founder of Grempler Realty, Mrs. Mary Bell Grempler. Evelyn remained active in the Grempler home until recently when her health began to fail. In 1971, she joined the Manna Church Family under the leadership of Pastor Joseph M. Brown, Sr. While at Manna; she was faithful in doing, faithful in giving, and faithful in her attendance. She was a member and served a term as president of the Usher Board. She was also a member of the Missionary Circle and regularly participated in their visits to nursing homes. All who knew Evelyn knew of her devout love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She often quoted “I’m just a sinner saved by Grace” because she truly believed Jesus was her all in all. Four brothers preceded her in death, John Robert Thompson, Frederick Rudolph Thompson, Mitchell Kendall Thompson and William Franklin Thompson-with whom she shared a life-long loving bond. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Alice Jean Harvey; five grandchildren, Joy, Donna (husband Charles), K. C., 0. C. and Robin (granddaughter, Wendy preceded her in death); ten great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Jocelyn, Jessica, Chardonney, Diarra, Charles, Christian, Lawrence, Mafio and Makayla; sister, Flora Lee Taylor; two brothers, Melvin Bruce Thompson and Elwood August Thompson (wife Laura); and a host of other relatives and friends.
