Douglas Lee Fisher

Douglas Lee Fisher, son of the late Hattie Bell (Fisher) Brady and the late David Chestnut, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 13,1952. He passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. He will always be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor and generosity. Douglas was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System, graduating from Northwestern High School in 1971. On April 16, 1984, he began working for Harkins Builders as a Laborer, later becoming a Laborer Supervisor. A dedicated employee of 33 years, Douglas, who was fondly called “Fish”, found Harkins to be more than simply a place of employment; Harkins became his second family. He could be seen often on his days off, at social outings or at family events wearing some type of “Harkins Builders” paraphernalia. Douglas loved his job and the many people he worked with. Despite health limitations imposed upon him by advancing age, he rarely missed a day of work. He was a reliable, loyal and lovable employee, colleague and friend. Douglas deeply loved his family; most specially, his sister Denise. He and Denise, who is one year his junior, were “joined at the hip”. They were very close to each other their entire lives, not passing even a few days without seeing or speaking to each other on the phone. Douglas doted on his sister and always called to check on her and she on him. There was nothing that they wouldn’t do for each other. He made countless visits to see Denise, Gary (his brother-in-law) and the “kids” and would stay for hours enjoying the company of his family over a meal and a large piece of his sister’s chocolate cake. He also regularly made time for his own brother-sister moments over breakfast, lunch or dinner. They were the quintessential brother and sister. Though he had no children of his own, he adored and forged a very special bond with his nephews and nieces. Douglas was very generous to them and showered them with his attention, playtime, gifts, and toys- everything an uncle could give. Upon his many visits, Douglas would ring the doorbell and suddenly screams of excitement rang out from the kids as they ran down the steps shouting “Uncle Douglas!”, and jumping into his arms! Even as adults, he regularly called them in the mornings to say hello and to wish them a good day. He attended every special event in their lives and added to the occasion as he shared his pride, approval and encouragement. Douglas was a jovial person, always laughing in the company of his family and friends. He loved dining at restaurants, enjoying delicious preparations of crab, prime rib steaks, ribs, and seafood, accompanied with an ice cold Pepsi. A kid at heart, Douglas maintained a substantial comic book collection, which he began at five years of age. In recent years, Douglas embarked on a regular study of the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses and started to attend Christian meetings every Sunday with his sister. He grew with excitement the more that he learned about his Creator, Jehovah, and the truths he found in the Bible. Douglas Lee Fisher was a loving brother, an adoring uncle, a loyal friend and an overall joy to be around. To know him was truly to love him. He will be sorely missed. He leaves to cherish his memory: his sister, Denise; his nephews, Shawn Fisher (Tynnae) and Jonathan Mason (Shantel); his nieces, Monique Rivera (Arnaldo); Alexis Winters (Jason) and Leah Joyner (Donte); one great-niece, Laniyah Fisher; his special friends, The Kirby Family, Dan Whitcomb, Michael “Big Mike” Madison, Dawn Myer, John Loftus, Brent Tracey, Wayne Sagal, Gladys Hyman and Bobby Widener; and a host of friends and beloved coworkers in the Harkins Builders family.
