Mrs. Dorothy Maria Sorillo

In loving memory of our cherished mother, Dorothy Sorillo, who embodied selflessness, love, peace, contentment and joy for her family and everyone she knew. Dorothy's journey began in Grenada. She was born to James Grandison and Elfrida Gilbert of Lafloretta Estate, Gouyave, St. John, on June 22, 1930. Her path crossed with Raymond Sorillo during his visit to Grenada, leading to their union in marriage on October 24, 1968. From this union, they have 7 lovely children. Prior to meeting Raymond, Dorothy had already embraced motherhood raising 3 children, Merlyn, Alleyne, and Ann. In 1974, Dorothy moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she established her home. She dedicated over 20 years of service to Johns Hopkins Hospital before retiring. A compassionate and family-focused individual, mom always prioritized the well-being of her children and others. We always knew that her home was a place we were welcomed at any time. As adults, there were times when life knocked us down harder than we could have handled, and mom welcomed us back home with open arms to stay until we were able to get back on our feet again. She would lecture, give advice and guidance and that's what made her real and unique because she still showed us love. Her home was opened just like the church that she was very involved in. Her nurturing spirit touched the lives of many, radiating warmth and kindness wherever she went. She was very passionate about her grandkids, some of which she raised and her great grands too. She had the opportunity of meeting the last great grandchild Baby Jasmine, during her last birthday celebration this past June and gave her the warmest kiss ever. Mom's vibrant presence was a source of laughter and joy, especially during lively gathering such as Thanksgiving feasts, Christmas dinners and family member's birthdays, which she hosted for many, many years at her home on Keyworth Ave. Her love for dancing and sharing stories of the past added a special spark to these occasions, creating lasting memories of happiness and togetherness. Talking about sharing stories. Mom's favorite soap opera was The Young and Restless. For 30 plus years she had a date at 12:30 pm with that show and you did not dare call her during that time. You would not get her. If you were a fan too, whoo hoo she would chat with you about what had happened on the show... Mom loved being in the action, never wanting to be left out of anything, reflecting her zest for living in the moment. I'm not sure if it's related to her living in Trinidad for some years where she fell in love with carnival. This lady followed carnival throughout her whole life. There were times when she could not stand for too long, so we sat her down in a chair on the parade route just so she could observe the masqueraders and celebration. She didn't just observed, when she heard her favorite song, she would catch a vibe, get up and shake her hips, and do a two stop to the beat of the soca rhythmic cultural music she enjoyed. Last year we went on a cruise and while planning whose care we'd leave her in, she asked to go on the trip also, so guess what? We granted her that wish. It was her first time on Fetetopia's cruise, where she had an amazing time. It was also a dream of hers. She also went this year 2024 and made friends with the artists, DJs and guests. Her culinary talents were a testament to her creativity and passion, as she effortlessly crafted delicious meals and baked bread from scratch, no recipe needed. She made a mean callaloo and crab and a mean sweet bread. That sweet bread sparked friendly competitions among us for a taste of it. Haha. I can jokingly say that it created a little bit of competition among us...hahaha..It must have been because of the love and care she infused each dish with. I wonder if she loved math, because she was really good with numbers. Up until her last moment. She was good at memorizing everyone's telephone number. Moms attention to detail extended to her sense of fashion, reflecting her meticulous nature and impeccable style. Mom actually had her own personal Avon lady who came to her house on a regular basis. She made sure her nails were well done at all times. Makeup was always flawless, hair done-up and well dressed for whatever the occasion was. Her legacy lives on through all 10 of her children: Merlyn, Alleyne, Kathleen, Ann, Keith, Bernice, Stephen, Carlyle, Stephanie, and Deborah, 2 son-in-laws Wiinston Williams and Harold Benjamin, along with her 26 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Lloyd Gilbert, cherished friends Marion Belfon and Anthony Sackey, as well as Ciana and Shane Gomes, and a multitude of relatives and a host of friend who all held a special place in her heart. As we bid farewell to Dorothy Sorillo, may her memory be a guiding light illuminating the path with love and fond remembrances. Rest in eternal peace, dear Mom. Your legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion will forever be cherished and celebrated. God bless your beautiful soul. You will be missed but will never be forgotten. Never!!!
