Dorothy Mae Elliott

Dorothy Mae Elliott was born in Rockhill, South Carolina on March 15,1942 to the late Viola Simpson and Walter Elliott. Dorothy was the third of four children. Preceding her in death were Elizabeth Elliott and Frances Elliott. She departed this life suddenly on Sunday August 28, 2022. Dorothy, affectionately called “Ms. Dot” received her education at Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Dorothy was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in Rock Hill. Dot relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1965 where she raised her beautiful family. After relocating to Baltimore, Dorothy worked in the wholesale packing industry for a number of years. In December 1977, she then began her employment at The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, where she worked in Facilities Management for over thirty years. She was well received and loved by Bryn Mawr School’s faculty, staff, students and those who worked and interacted with her daily. Her aim was to provide a safe and comfortable working environment that made people feel well. She then retired in 2009. Dorothy was family oriented with a very loving heart. She was known for offering the less fortunate a place to stay and a hot meal. For those who were hungry she fed and for those who needed shelter, she provided it- and did not complain. Not only did she provide food and shelter for family, but for those she did not know. Those who spent time with Dot can attest that she was a woman of few words; however, when she spoke, everyone listened. Keeping herself busy was an everyday routine. From cooking, cleaning, taking care of her family and even mowing the front and back yard. Dot was no stranger to hard work- and took pride in keeping her home spot clean and welcoming. Hard work was a part of Dot’s character and strength. Dorothy had a green thumb. Her daily routine consisted of doing handwork including watering and nurturing her indoor/outdoor garden. She enjoyed cooking a variety of Southern meals in her favorite silver pot. One of her favorite dishes was preparing jambalaya for the monthly family gatherings. For fun and leisure, she occasionally spent time bowling and traveling to the casino with family and friends. Dot enjoyed sightseeing and visited Myrtle beach and Niagara Falls for vacation. Dorothy was devoted to helping and caring for others and was dedicated to her relatives. She was the backbone of the family. She appreciated dancing, spending time with her great grandchildren Howard and Hadrian and listening to songs by Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. Dorothy was the epitome of strength, selflessness, a confidant and an anchor for many. Her natural comedic personality would make anyone laugh under the most serious of occasions. She had a welcoming spirit that would light up a room. Don’t let Dot and Ruby get together because then the shenanigans begin. From sitting on the porch cracking jokes, to cutting a rug at family gatherings, to she and Ruby two-stepping. Her favorite line while she was performing her two-step was, “now see”. Dorothy is greatly loved and will be truly missed by her family and friends. Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter Angela Elliott; (preceded her in death) Leroy; Edna and Darlene; one sister Ruby Hayes; seven grandchildren Trina, Latiere, Antwuan, Crystal, Shawn, Cortez, Shanice, and (preceded her in death) Tyrone, twenty-two great-grandchildren, sixteen great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
