Dorothy Friend Byrd

The Life of Dorothy Friend Byrd Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of hisfaithful servants. PSALM 116:15 God has called another angel home. Havmg been hospitalized at Memorial Regional Medical Center, on July 11, 2016, Dorothy Friend Byrd entered into eternal rest with our Lord and Savior. She was born on September 6, 1933 to the late Gertie Mae and Alexander Friend, Sr. in Amelia County. Dorothy was the oldest of ten children. After moving to Richmond, Dorothy met her husband, the late William E. Byrd, Sr. They were united for 64 years and built a nice life together raising their children. At an early age, Dorothy joined Union Baptist Church in Amelia County where she was very active serving the Lord. Church and its gospel have always been a part of Dorothy's life. After moving to Richmond, she joined two other churches that were close to her neighborhood before making her final church home at Rising Mount Zion. Because of her love for helping others, Dorothy received a nursing certification from MCV. She worked as a Supervisor in the central sterile supply area for 20 years before retiring. For the next 20 years, she worked as an in-home health care nurse until her health failed. Dorothy found joy in serving and caring for others. She was trnly a loving caregiver. She enjoyed traveling, going to dances and dressing to the nines. She loved talking on the phone with her sisters and brothers. In her later years, Dorothy's grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her so much joy. She really cherished spending time with them. At any given time, usually once a month, she would host a keeping the family together party, as she liked to called it. She will definitely be missed by all. Dorothy leaves to cherish precious memories, three children: Williaru Byrd, Jr. (Bernice), Diane Turner and Connie Seabron (Tyrone); six sisters: JoAnn Thompson, Auna Wilson (Clyde), Mae Taylor, Mary Simmons (Alphonso), Maria Davis (Jarues) and Martha Smith (Douglas); three brothers: Alexander (Ella), George (Shirley) and John (Charmane); five grandchildren, one of whom she raised, Lamont Standberry; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
