Deborah " Debbye" Brown

Deborah "Debbye" Spencer Brown, a devoted educator, loving matriarch, and woman of grace, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026. She was born on July 28, 1947, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Willie Lee Spencer and Annie Mae Spencer. As the eldest child, Deborah naturally carried a spirit of care, leadership, and strength throughout her life. Debbye was baptized at New Psalmist Baptist Church in Lochern, Maryland, where her faith began to take root early in life. She was a proud graduate of Forest Park High School, Class of 1965, and went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Coppin State College. With a passion for nurturing young minds, she dedicated her professional life to teaching first and second grade students until her retirement, leaving a lasting impact on generations of children. She was an active and proud member of Les Gemmes, a national social club, where she built lifelong friendships and contributed her vibrant spirit. Debbye was known for her love of cooking and her ability to bring people together through food. Her husband, Lee, would often tease her by saying, "Debbie can read a recipe," but those who knew her best understood that her meals were made with love and always deeply appreciated. Her greatest joy, however, was her family, especially her grandchildren. She spoke of them often, cherished every moment spent with them, and delighted in preparing special treats just for them. Debbye also enjoyed fine dining, reading, fashion, and surrounding herself with beauty. She had a particular fondness for black and white attire and was always impeccably dressed, carrying herself with elegance and poise. Her home was a reflection of her love for beauty and care. Throughout the year, it was filled with flowers, both inside and out. In the spring and summer months, her front yard bloomed with vibrant life, while her back deck was adorned with carefully tended potted plants. Deborah Spencer Brown leaves to cherish her memory her stepdaughter, Chelai Brown Johnson of Temple Hills, Maryland; two beloved grandchildren, Joshua and Kazia Johnson; her sister, Denise Spencer of New York; her brother, Darryl Spencer of Murrieta, California; and a host of cherished relatives, including numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by three aunts-Queen E. Jones, Margie M. Tuck, and Doris Scott-and two uncles, Bernard King and George King. Debbye’s life was one of love, dedication, and quiet elegance. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
