Clarence U. Burley Jr.

Clarence Uriahs Burley, Jr. was born in Baltimore, MD to Doris and Clarence Burley, Sr. on December 31, 1951. Clarence departed this life on April 17, 2023 while at his family home in Catonsville. Clarence grew up in the Sandtown-Winchester area of West Baltimore and was educated in the Baltimore City Public school system. An avid scholar, he graduated with honors from Frederick Douglass High School in 1969 and Bowie State University in 1973 where he received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. While at Bowie, he was initiated into his beloved Epsilon Sigma “Country Psi” chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in the spring of 1970. Clarence began his professional career in clinical pathology at Shock Trauma of University of Maryland Medical Center, moving on to Georgetown University Hospital, and rose to director of clinical pathology at John Hopkins Hospital. A forever leader in the community, Clarence started a chess club at Mt. Washington Elementary School, leading the team to participate and win national and state level tournaments. He also served as assistant coach for his son’s teams at Hanlon Park Pop Warner football league and Edreco youth basketball and baseball leagues. An avid swimmer, Clarence also served as lifeguard at Druid Hill Park Swimming Pool and with Girls Scouts of America teaching Baltimore City youth how to swim. Serving on many leadership boards, Clarence held the position of Vice President on the board of directors of the Benjamin Banneker Museum and was vital in the ground breaking and opening in 1998. He also served as president of his 1969 Douglass class reunion committee which he cared deeply for. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and deceased spouse, Henrietta Burley. He is survived by current spouse, Renee Burley; three sons, Keon, Gerard, and Devin Burley; Nine grandchildren Devin Jr, Jada, Cheyenne, Dezmen, Milan, Miraj, Dorien, Koen and Islynn (preceded in death); two brothers, Quentin and Anthony Burley; three sisters, LoisAnn, Valerie, and Janice. Three sister in laws, Michelle, Beverly, and Cheryl Moore; Two brother in laws James and Irvin Moore and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews and family.
