Charles William Hance

CHARLES WILLIAM HANCE (aka Sugarpie) gained his wings on July 17, 2026, at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He was surrounded by his daughters. Charles was born on July 24, 1933, in Kent County, Maryland to the late Linara Gibbs Brown, (Webster) and James Herman Hance (Lucille). Charles received his education at Coleman’s Elementary School in Worton, Maryland and graduated from Henry Highland Garnett High School in Chestertown, Maryland. After graduation he joined the United States Army and served two years. Later, he returned to Kent County before moving to Baltimore, Maryland where he married the love of his life Maxine Moody; they were able to spend 41 years together. Maxine preceded him in death. Charles was employed for many years with his father at American Sheltering and Refinery. He retired in 1991 from Glidden Paint Company. At a young age he attended Union United Methodist Church in Colemans Corner, Worton, Maryland. After accepting Jesus Christ as his personal savior he joined Bible way Freewill Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Bishop J.L. Gamble which is now known as Bibleway Christian Fellowship under the leadership of Pastor G. Wayne Parker. Charles loved singing with the Male Chorus, and he faithfully attended Bible Study. Charles loved watching boxing, westerns and horse racing every chance he got. He also enjoyed reality shows like Karamo and the comedy show Girlfriends. Charles was the patriarch of our family; he has five generations. He leaves to cherish his memory three beautiful, loving and caring daughters, Carleen Murrill (Daniel) of Baltimore, MD, Crystal Jones (Avon) of Chestertown, MD and Carolyn Dawson (Antoine) of New Oxford, PA; two handsome sons, Charles Hance of Delaware and Carlos Hance of Baltimore, Maryland; thirteen grandchildren, Shavon Williams (Stephen), Avon Jones (Nicole), Cleavon Jones, Daniel Murrill (Tina), Danielle Scott, Lonnie Murrill, Angela Cavanaugh (Kieran), Angel Coutroupis (Andreas), Armonte’ Dawson, Alishia Hance, Charles Hance, Destiny Hance and Shawn Vincent; twenty-five greatgrandchildren and twenty-seven great- great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Diana Flakes (Charles), Virginia Perkins, Joyce Moody and brother-in-law, Charles Dorsey; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, daughter Constance Adams, brother Horace Wilson, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His legacy of love, faith and perseverance will live in the Heart of all who are blessed to know Him. Though He is gone from our sight, He lives forever in the cherish memories of those who loved Him.
