Catherine Roberta Case

Catherine Roberta Case was the fourth child and first daughter born to the late Geraldine and George Case. Catherine was born on February 16, 1944. Affectionately nicknamed “Betty Lou” by her godfather, she was baptized in the Catholic Christian tradition in March 1944 at St. Pius V Church. Catherine began her education at St. Pius V Catholic School in kindergarten in the fall of 1949 and graduated from eighth grade in the spring of 1958. She was awarded a full scholarship to St. Frances Academy in East Baltimore, where she graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1962. Following high school, Catherine attended Towson State College, now Towson State University. In the spring of 1966, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Catherine began her professional journey as a mathematics teacher at Calverton Junior High School in West Baltimore. Although she found public school teaching to be a uniquely different and challenging experience, those who knew her recognized the gentle, thoughtful, and humble manner she brought to her students. Catherine later interviewed for employment with the federal government and began a distinguished career as a computer programmer with the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, Maryland. Her drive and determination quickly drew the attention of her supervisors, and she advanced to the roles of computer analyst and systems engineer. Encouraged by her continued passion for mathematics and computer science, Catherine went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from Morgan State College, now Morgan State University for which the federal government furnished the scholarship. Although Catherine’s career was flourishing, she felt called to a deeper purpose. She began the process of adopting a child through a Baltimore City adoption agency. In 1986, she welcomed a beautiful eight-month-old baby boy into her life and lovingly named him Gregory Michael Case. Wanting the very best for her son, and valuing the education and personal foundation she had received in Catholic school, Catherine desired that Gregory experience the same. Catherine also had a creative spirit. She learned to crochet and knit, sharing her gifts with family members through special blankets and sweaters lovingly designed by her hands. While working at the Social Security Administration, Catherine joined the agency’s bowling league and enjoyed bowling regularly. She also had a green thumb; visitors to her home were often greeted by the sight of her many African violets beautifully displayed on a large shelving unit. Catherine loved to travel. Her summers were often spent visiting remarkable destinations, including Paris, London, Spain, Portugal, and many other places. She delighted in bringing home unique gifts and treasures for family members from around the world. Catherine’s faith in God was her safe refuge. She lived her faith through the generous sharing of her time, talent, and treasure. Ministry to parishioners and service beyond the church doors were central to her life. She served in several church ministries, proclaiming the Word of God as a lector and bringing the Body and Blood of Christ to the homebound as a Minister of Holy Communion, visiting and praying with them. Catherine was also a member of the Knights of St. John Ladies Auxiliary #219. After retiring from the federal government, she became even more active in church life. On the second Monday of each month, she served as the BINGO caller for the seniors, who looked forward to an evening of fellowship and fun. She also helped support the Circle Raffle, where ticket purchasers could win a five-hundred-dollar jackpot. Many Josephite pastors, priests, and their families purchased books of tickets in support of the church’s fundraising efforts, and Fathers Kearns, Harfmann, Del Vecchio, and others were among the winners. Catherine used her spreadsheet skills to maintain careful fundraising records, and even when record keeping became challenging, she remained committed to supporting the church. Catherine loved quietly, fervently, and unconditionally. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents Geraldine and George Case, two brothers Michael Anthony and Father Lowell David Case, S.S.J., and one sister Joanne Gibbs. She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Gregory Michael Case; five brothers, Carl Joseph, Charles Gregory, Denis Jerome Nathaniel Leroy, and Raymund Vincent; four sisters, Veronica Mercedes, Alice Marie, Rosemary Carla, and Jean Consilio; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, church family, and friends,
