Bennie Charles Bridges

I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. For I am the Lord, your God.Giving all the praise and glory to our Lord. We thank Him for the gift of life given to Bennie Charles Bridges born Thanksgiving Day November 25, 1920 to Estelle Adams and Charlie Bridges in Prosperity, S.C. His maternal grandmother Mary L. Jones and his extended family of aunts Nettie, Ruby, Marietta and Dora reared him.He relocated to Baltimore at an early age. He received his education from the Baltimore Public School System, graduating with Douglass High School class of “41”. He entered the U.S. Army where he served his country during World War II while stationed in Leyte, Philippines. He later was employed by the US Government, various men’s retail stores and the City of Baltimore. He retired in 1985.Bennie was very gregarious and loved all people. His ministry in life was to help others. If he knew of someone in need of anything, he would make it his business to help, or if he could not help he surely knew someone else who could. Bennie had a keen sense of fashion and style and was an impeccable dresser. He enjoyed jazz and had a wonderful tenor singing voice. He was extremely proud of his vegetable garden and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor especially his two-pound Beefsteak tomatoes. Bennie had a big heart and cherished family and friends. He often joked that he did things “his way”.Bennie was united in marriage to Levene E. Davis, October 9, 1968. They were blessed with a daughter, Nicole M. Bridges. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father and friend. He affectionately referred to his immediate family as “The Three Bridges”.Bennie accepted Christ at an early age. He later joined Bethel A.M.E. Church. He prayed daily, always acknowledging God as his savior and source of strength. Left to cherish his precious memory are his wife Levene Bridges; daughter Nicole M. Bridges. Three sisters, Catherine Reese of Baltimore, Ruth Taylor and Rev. Alma O’Bryant of Columbia, S.C; one aunt Dora Gowans of Baltimore and multitude of relatives and friends.God called Bennie’s name on October 17, 2001. We praise god that Bennie, being a child God, recognized His voice and followed.We will remember a chapter completed, a page turned a life well lived, a rest well earned. So lived Bennie C. Bridges.
