Annie Poteat

Annie S. Poteat went forward into eternity peacefully on March 12, 2012 to be with God, Lord, and Jesus Christ. She was born in North Carolina to the late Herbert Smith and Lula Jeffries Smith. She received the Lord, Jesus Christ at the Methodist Church in North Carolina. Later in the 1960’s she joined and was baptized at the Basilica of New York. She loved praying and to worship God everyday at the Basilica. This was her fruits for the day. In December of 1940, she married General Green Poteat, who preceded her in death. They had two lovely daughters, Gladys M. Lindsay from California and Geraldine (Barbara) Martin from New Jersey. Annie was blessed with four grands and three Great-grandchildren. Mrs. Poteat received her early education from Caswell County High School in Yanceyville, North Carolina before she moved to Brooklyn, New York. She loved and embraced education. She constantly read books, classic novels, writing poems and singing songs to children and inspiring other people’s children. She enjoyed obtaining her college degrees in early childhood education and art education at Pace University and St. Joseph’s College. She taught and was involved with the public and private schools in New York in which she retired. Her skills were with four-six year olds. Those were her children too. In addition, Mrs. Poteat’s sculpture and art works have been on displays at the Brooklyn Museum, Pace University, St. Joseph’s College and the Museum of Art in Washington, D.C. where she received honors. She started a free lunch program for the neighborhood children. She had Bible studies in her home in Brooklyn, New York every week for a long period of time. After relocating to Brooklyn, New York where she lived for twenty-three years, she Enjoyed the pleasure of Earl Graves regarding business. She joined different political Clubs with Congressman Ed Towns and others. She was a supervisor for the Poll for Election in Brooklyn, New York and recruited members for her club. God blessed Mrs. Poteat to travel, to take cruises with her grandchildren, and other enjoyable experiences. She will be missed by family members and friends. Mrs. Poteat was preceded in death by her husband, General Green Poteat; two sisters, Susie M. Jay and Luella Long; six brothers, Joseph, Percy, Herbert, John, Ivory and Richard. She leaves to cherish her memory: two children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; one brother-in-law; other relatives and friends.
