    Velma Jessie Bailey

    January 15, 1922 - March 13, 2021

Velma Jessie Johnson Bailey, fondly known to everyone as 'Aunt Velma' was born January 15, 1922 in Roxboro, NC to the late Ernest Johnson and Margaret Beasley Johnson. She was the fifth of six children born to this union. Velma was formally educated in the public schools of Roxboro, NC. She quietly passed into the presence of her beloved Lord on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the Future Care Old Court Nursing Facility. Velma was a blessed age of 99. She married the love of her life Ellsworth C. Bailey. Although they did not have any children in their union together they raised his sons Ellsworth Jr., Michael & Doran until his death in 1977. She was employed by the U.S. Government at the Social Security Adminstration for over 35 years retiring in January 1982. Upon retirement she becamse a fatithful Foster Grandparent helping students in the evenings. Velma was a faithful member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church and followed them to the current location of Union Memorial UMC. At Union, she was a trustee, member of 3F Unit, United Methodist Women, and Finance Committee just to name a few. Fondly referred to as The Golden Girls, Velma and her sister, the late Viola (Babe) Bee, established their own travel club, B's Travel Club. Everyone knew they were two peas in a pod. They used this venture to raise money for their church, Union Memorial. Velma was a very loving person and she especially loved her family. She would give you advise whether you wanted it or not. Her home was always the place to go for family gatherings. She loved football and especially golf. Couldn't nobody tell her nothing about her Tiger Woods. She loved traveling abroad, playing cards and especially shopping. She lived in the 800 block of Chauncey Avenue for over 53 years. She was an active member of the Reservoir Hill Neighborhood Association until her health failed. Velma was and is loved by many.
