April 23, 1936 - April 10, 2022
Legacy of Life Shirley Temple Young Irving transitioned peacefully into eternal life with the Lord on Sunday morning, April 10, 2022. She was preceded in death by her mother Mildred Carr Young and son, Darryle O. Irving. She was born April 23, 1936 and now comes to rest April 23, 2022. We have been blessed to have shared in her life’s journey through the years. Nurtured by her love and fostered by her benevolent spirit. We appreciate the learned lessons and values instilled by her. Her welcoming array of light within her smile and conversations that brought joy and laughter to all. A loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, neighbor, and co-worker. Shirley was the only child of the late Mildred Carr Young and the granddaughter of Peter Sherman and Lottie Carr Bush Young. She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Irving Banks and Antionette V. Irving, granddaughters Shereka A. and Alisha D. Banks, and Terronica Irving (Delvin Sr.) Perkins and great grandson, Devlin Jr. Shirley graduated valedictorian of Essex County Training School in Tappahannock, Virginia in 1953 (studied by oil lamplight), in addition to Paul L. Dunbar High School in Washington, DC in 1954. She started her nursing education and training in 1955; Hampton Institute School of Nursing and Dixie Hospital in Hampton, Virginia in 1956 and St. Phillip School of Nursing in Richmond, Virginia in 1957. Her nursing career spanned over 60+ years which included Beth Shalom Home of Central Virginia 25+ years, Parham Health Care 10+ years, and McGuire, VA Hospital 25+ (often times working at least two jobs, mainly during the night). Shirley loved to travel and attend sporting events, concerts, and the casino. She was an avid football fan especially of the Washington Redskins. She was dedicated to her church and church family. She was a committed member and loyal servant of The St Paul’s Baptist Church (50+ years), devoted Girl Scout Troop Leader that treasured working with and mentoring young ladies, helping them to earn badges and participate in outings while experiencing adventures of a life time. She was a member of the counting team, hospitality ministry, and children’s ministry. She was proud to serve her church and was a devoted servant with a special rapport with her Pastor (“coffee anyone”) and the first lady. A loyal, dedicated and faithful servant, we thank you and appreciate you for a job well done.
