Robert James Caster Jr.

Robert James Caster, Jr. was born on October 26, 1941. He was the second of ten children born to the late Robert James Caster, Sr. and Geraldine R. Caster. Robert departed this life suddenly on April 16, 2019. Robert was educated in the public school system of Northumberland County, Virginia. After he completed his education, he would follow his father to Washington, D.C. where he worked a variety of jobs. He worked in construction and served the patrons of Bish Thompson Seafood Restaurant as a mixologist until it closed in 1996. 'Brother', as he was fondly known, began shining shoes on 10th & U Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C. at Ponytails Shoe Shine and Shoe Repair. This iconic shop was popular and reminds you of the neighborhood barbershop. The old and the young would tell stories throughout the day. Brother fit right in. He could tell a good story with the best of them and you would often be left looking at each other, shrugging your shoulders saying, 'maybe, maybe not'. With the help of his brother Allen, Brother was hired by Hilton-Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C. He shined the shoes of the many policy officers, council men and women and business persons staying or passing through the hotel. The ultimate highlight of this career was shining the shoes of President Barack Obama. An occasion which would was featured in the Washington Post. Brother loved life to the fullest. He enjoyed a good Friday night pinochie-game, family gatherings, and good music. He would be the first and the last on the dance floor. Above all, he was the number 1 fan of his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He really thought 'dem boys' were the best. Robert James Caster, Jr. has completed his earthly journey and will be sorely missed. His legacy will forever live on through: his son, Robert Lassiter, his daughter, Mary Lassiter; his grandchildren, Tamara and Tre-Marie Lassiter; seven sisters, Solone (Franklin), Beverly (Ed), Betty, Nita (Greg), Robin, Michelle (Melvin) and Sherrie; two brothers, Dwight (Donna) and Allen (Christine); three aunts, Ruth, Joan, Dorothy; four uncles, Hampton (Rosetta). Edmond, Odell, Rudolph (Otelia); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Fare Thee Well, Brother, we will see you again on the other side.
