Millicent Karen Yates was born on December 26, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland to the former Mildred R. Chesson and Ambose M. Yates. She departed this life quietly, in her sleep on October 18, 2021. Millicent was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in 1968. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Special Education from Coppin State University. In addition, Millicent earned a Master of Arts from Loyola University in School Counseling. Millicent had a love of learning, teaching, and children. Millicent started her professional career as a special education teacher in the Baltimore Public School System and then became a school counselor. In addition, Millicent served as a Summer school teacher and an after school teacher for children who were home bound and too ill to attend standard classroom instruction. She retired after giving 30 years of loyal service to BCPS. Millicent was inducted into Chi Sigma Iota, International Honor Society of Professional Counselors and served in the School Counselors Mentorship Program. She was listed in Who’s Who in Education. Millicent was very creative. She was a gifted calligrapher, gardener, and gourmet cook. In addition, she enjoyed ten pin bowling and participated in two bowling leagues. She also enjoyed singing and was a soprano in several choirs in Baltimore. Millicent loved her family and was one of the most devoted and loving people anyone has ever known. Millicent loved the Lord and demonstrated that love through her kindness and generosity. She was raised in the United Methodist Church and was baptized and confirmed at Metropolitan UMC; she later became a member of the Douglas Memorial Community Church. Millicent was loved and cherished deeply and will be missed beyond words. Heaven is a little brighter because God has called one of His dearest daughters home to receive her reward and take her rest. Millicent leaves to cherish her memory and mourn their loss two sisters, Kelly L. Moore and Camilla M. Raymond, a god-daughter, Heather E. Russell, and many neighbors and friends.
