Michael David Bingham

Michael David Bingham, 56, of Chesterfield, departed this life February 25, 2017. He was born on November 25, 1960 in Columbia, South Carolina, son of the late Edward Bingham Jr. and Mary H. Bingham. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. In 1983, he graduated from Virginia Union University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He furthered his studies at the State of Virginia Capital Police Academy and the Randolph Macon College Police Academy where he graduated in 1991. He was employed by the County of Henrico Virginia dedicating 29 years of service,his tenure there lead to his current appointment as the Superintendent of Henrico Juvenile Detention Home. He played an integral role in expanding the Community Programs Section to include the Services Through Opportunity Program (STOP), where at-risk youth are provided the opportunity to perform community service. Mike also expanded the facility’s volunteer programs to include Job Fairs, Jail Ministries and Health Awareness Clinics. He has served on The County of Henrico’s Employee Equal Opportunity Commission and also as a Child Advocate throughout his entire career. With county officials he developed the “Docent Program”, where all students in Henrico County Middle Schools are given first-hand guided tours of the courts, detention home and jail. Mike was a member of the Virginia Juvenile Detention Association, Virginia Juvenile Justice Association and the County’s Gang Task Force Committee. Michael also worked in various correctional facilities in South Carolina from 1984 to 1990. He was the Vice President, 38th Basic Police Class, Crater Criminal Justice Academy, 1992; Vice President of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Lambda Chapter, Spring 80; three-year letterman of the Varsity Football Team at Virginia Union University, 1980-83; All Conference Football Player for Central Inter-collegiate Athletic Association, Free Agent Denver Broncos (NFL), 1983; Free Agent with Denver Gold (USFL), 1983; and Charles F. Bolden Memorial Award for Most Contributing Athlete from South Carolina, 1982-1983. He displayed the highest level of professionalism throughout his career. One of his philosophies was remaining “calm in the midst of the storm”. Mike has been recognized by several organizations for his service in the community. In 1980, he was elected as Vice-President of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity (Lambda Chapter) at Virginia Union University. He was recognized by Inside Business as a member of the top “Forty Under Forty”. Mike was a loving husband, father, son and brother. He had a tremendously big heart and will be remembered for his gentle, kind disposition, and all the love he has always showed his family. The gifts of love he left behind will always be treasured. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Daisy F. Bingham of 15 years; caring sons, Brandon Fraction, Kevin and Corey Bingham; mother, Mary H. Bingham; sister, Ann Bingham Johnson (Chad); foster brothers, Thomas Davis and Benjamin Davis; stepbrother, Marvin Price; sisters-in-law, Cynthia Thompson and Arnetta Saunders (Allison); brother-in-law, David K. Fraction, Jr. (Clarissa); a host of other relatives and many special caring friends.
