Mary Jane Stewart

MARY JANE STEWART (Nana), daughter of the late Edward J. and Mary J. Smith was born on January 26, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland. She departed this life on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 2:45 p.m. after a lengthy illness. She received her education through the Baltimore City Public School System. She later met and married James W. Stewart (preceded her in death on August 12, 2000) and out of their union they were blessed with five children: Beverly, James Jr. (preceded in death), Debra, Janice and Joseph. Her love for the Lord led her to First Christ United Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Harry Greene. She served on the Usher Board and Kitchen Committee. Nana’s full-time job was taking care of everyone’s children. She had a passion for all children, treated each and everyone the same and turned no one away. She loved and cared for numerous children- most of them from birth. She watched them grow up, go to college, get married, and even have kids of their own. Anyone could call Nana day or night for her to baby sit and her response would be “just bring to me.” Nana enjoyed her soap operas- especially The Young and the Restless and The Bold and Beautiful. Her other favorite shows were: The Price is Right, Family Feud, Criminal Minds and the Good Wife. She loved to play Pitty Pat, Solitaire, Pokeno, handheld slot machines, going to Atlantic City, trips to the dollar store, drinking Coca Cola Classic and eating out with her church buddies. Nana’s favorite song was Shackles by Mary Mary. Her brothers and sisters who preceded her in death are: Evelyn Mae Smith, George Smith, Ernest Johnson, Edward Johnson, Calvin Smith, Eleanor Kearney and Dorothy Lockers. She leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Beverly A. Burston, Debra S. Glay and Janice M. Cuttino; one son, Joseph E. Stewart; two sons-in-law, Ronnie K. Glay and Ray A. Cuttino; three sisters, Catherine Bates, Leanna Johnson and Betty Jamison; two brothers, Robert and William Smith; four sister-in-law, Magaly Smith, Celestine Smith, Carolyn Smith and Helen Stewart; five grandchildren, Colby L. Burston (Vonnie Burston), Sheronne N. Fields (Christopher Fields), Justine R. Cuttino (Belinda Cooper), Kayla R. Cuttino and Ariel M. Glay; seven great-grandchildren, Cameron, Carmen, Alayiah, Casey, Colbi, Ashton and Sidney; special friends, Ms Oslo Johnson, Ms. Pearl Arrington and Ms. Vera Gaskins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
