A Time to be Born LOUISE BOYER DEAN was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 27, 1919. She was raised by her mother, the late Gussie Cooper and her stepfather, the late Herbert Cooper. She departed this life on July 28, 2022 at her home for more than 70 years with her ever devoted daughter by her side. A Time to Learn Louise attended Baltimore City Schools and received her diploma from Douglass High School. After her graduation, her mother and aunts expected her to join them as domestic workers, however Louise was determined to attend college. With the enthusiastic support of her mother she attended North Carolina A&T College (now NC A&T University). Louise graduated from A&T earning a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in history and a minor in Business Education. Later in life, she studied at Loyola University Maryland where she earned a Masters equivalent with an emphasis in Guidance Counseling. A Time to Embrace While attending A&T, she met the love of her life, Richard Monroe Dean. They were married on March 23, 1946. They were lovingly wed for 61 years. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Valarie Wanda whom she adored and nurtured. Louise was a loving and devoted wife and mother. A Time to Work Louise was a full-time mother for several years. She returned to the workforce, taking a position as a bookkeeper for the Harris Appliance Shop. She also taught adult education at Carver Vocational High School and Douglass High School in the evenings. Later on, she taught business courses at the Cortez Peters Business College, subsequently, became a substitute teacher at Dunbar High, Garrison Junior High, and Edmondson High Schools. After she was encouraged to return to full time teaching, she began teaching at Gwynns Falls Junior High School where she received the Best Teacher Award. Following many years of teaching she became a guidance counselor until she retired. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. He saw you getting weaker and whispered “Come and Rest,” His garden must be beautiful because He only takes the best. Niece, Rebecca and Great-Niece, Jennifer A Time to Play Louise came to A&T with her three best friends. They all joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. These four women remained lifelong friends. Louise had many interests. She belonged to several clubs. She belonged to a social club called “The Pinochle Misses.” She was a member of the club for many, many years enjoying friendships of these amazing women for life. Louise was also an active member of the “Needles and Pins” club which allowed her to express her creative side, learning to knit and other needlework projects. Louise was also an enthusiastic member of a block club called the Penny Ante Club. Louise enjoyed travel both domestic and foreign. The family drove across country twice. Her travels took her to most of the European countries, as well as the Middle East and the Orient, bringing unique treasures from these trips. Louise was an impassioned shopper. She always had an eye for a good deal. She had a love for lovely things such as fine china, Waterford crystal and beautiful linens to name just a few. A Time to Serve Louise was brought up in the Baptist Church. She continued to affirm her spirituality at Fulton Baptist Church, initially by making sure that Valarie had a stimulating religious experience through attending Sunday School, worship services, and participating in various activities in the church. She enthusiastically supported all of these activities. Later in life, Louise became a member of Fulton Baptist Church, serving as treasurer of the “Emergency Club” for many years, and offering her support of all church activities. Louise found great joy in being with her family and extended family. Nothing gave her more pleasure than to have a big meal with all of her family around the table. She also derived pleasure being a loyal and caring neighbor. She was known for her kindness and generosity. She was a caring daughter, wife and mother. A Time to Remember Louise leaves to mourn: her loving daughter, Valarie Dean; nieces Rebecca Warren and Sylvia Stanback (Hubert), a devoted greatniece, Jennifer Warren Lot (Anthony) and great-niece, Danita Ramirez; faithful close family friends, Sherl Woodland and Elaine Davis (Clyde); devoted caregivers, Lillie Robinson (Jesse) and Erica Wills; as well as a host of family and friends.
