Kevin Shelman, Sr.

On November 14, 2023, KEVIN SHELMAN peacefully gained his wings and was ushered into Heaven. Born on June 12, 1963, Kevin was the beloved son of Rosa Coleman and the late Clifford Shelman but the father who raised him was the late Alphonza Jackson. Kevin graduated from Milford Mill High School and was an avid football player. He assisted his team in winning many games. He enjoyed cooking, dancing, movies, music, and family gatherings. He would spend hours creating CDs and movies for himself and to share with friends and family. Kevin was always a hardworking man from a young age. He kept the neighborhood grass cut in the summer and shoveled away the snow during the winter. As Kevin’s career grew, he became a professional upholsterer at The Hecht Company. He enjoyed designing and building the furniture customers would soon see later in the store. This role also enhanced his knowledge in performing home improvement jobs. When the furniture industry changed, he decided to attend and graduated from AllState Career Truck Driving School earning his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). As the years went by, Kevin decided to say goodbye to the trucking life and started a new career at Domino Sugar. Family was important to Kevin, and he truly enjoyed the family gatherings to share food, fun, and laughter, especially card games. The card games were played from house to house for hours on end. Kevin was affectionately known as “Dad”, “Unc”, “K” and “Kev”. He loved to hear Jordyn (Girly Girl) calling his name, “Hey Unc! I need help, or I need you”. Kevin’s spiritual journey showcased his evolving beliefs and commitment to his faith. He was a member of New Antioch Baptist Church, Bishop Dr. Alonzo A. Wilson presiding. Kevin cherished his mother, Rosa. The bond between them can never be broken, even in death. He showered her with love and protection along with ensuring she had whatever she desired or needed. Kevin touched our lives, and his memory lives on in stories we share and the love we hold. Kevin was predeceased in death by his father Alphonza Jackson, sister Deborah Coleman-Brown, niece Wendy Coleman, uncles Louis Coleman (Shirley), Hayden Coleman, Robert Coleman, Wallace Coleman, Isaac Coleman (Judy), and Charles Maxie, aunts Susie Coleman-Ford, Janice Austin, Delores Henson, Maytie Jackson and Rose Fowler. Kevin leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Rosa Coleman; brother James Coleman; sister, Towanda Harris; two brothers-in-law, Carl Harris and Arthur Brown; two sons, Kevin Shelman Jr. and LaQuan Shelman; five grandchildren, Malik Shelman, Kevin Shelman Jr. II, Christian Shelman, Kajianea Shelman and Royal Shelman McDanielle; great-grandchildren, Naomi Shelman, uncle John Coleman; aunts, Gladys Hale and Ruth Maxie; god-daughter, Zanakia Parker Armwood; god-brother, Andre Henry; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friend.
