    Josephine Nelson Fleming

    October 3, 1954 - July 26, 2021

    Josephine Nelson Fleming, 66 years, departed her earthly dwelling for her new heavenly home on July 26, 2021.She was born on October 3, 1954 in Richmond,Virginia. She was the third of four children born to the late James and Annie Young Nelson and was named after her father’s sister. She was preceded in death by her sister Elva Ann Nelson and brother James Ottoway Nelson. Josephine, affectionately known as “Jo” to many, was educated in the Richmond Public Schools, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, Class of 1971. After graduating, she continued her education at Howard University and Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She worked as a clerk and retired as a supervisor after 25 years at the United States Postal Service. She accepted Christ at a young age, was baptized and has been an active, lifetime member of Sixth Baptist Church. Josephine loved her church and was gifted to serve in several capacities, most notably as the Assistant Business Manager, President, Recording Secretary, Member and Honoree of The E. L. Fleming Gospel Chorus since 1971, Financial Secretary of the Young People Fellowship Ministry, Member of the Program Committee, Chairperson of The Sisterhood Ministry and in 1997 was ordained as Deaconess, where she served as President and Assistant Secretary. Josephine married Gerald Fleming and from this union two beautiful children were born, Darryl and Carmen. She was dedicated to whatever she was involved in and always displayed God’s Fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. She was loyal, very thoughtful and had a beautiful laugh. Serving The Lord, being a Mother, and Grandmother was the highlight of her life. She was never too busy and always had time to listen. She loved God and her family deeply. Remaining to cherish her memory are her children, son Darryl G. Fleming; daughter Carmen N. Fleming; grandsons Zaire Massey and Eon Fleming; brother Clyde O. Nelson; sisters-in-law Rosalind W. Nelson and Winona D. Fleming, brothers-in-law Emmett Fleming,Jr. and Major Fleming, Sr.; niece Sierra Fleming; nephews Aaron J. Nelson, Sr., Emmett Fleming III, Eric Fleming, Major Fleming, Jr.; a host of loving relatives, friends, and her beloved dog, Kenney.
