Jean Lois Underwood
June 18, 1941 - April 14, 2021
Jean Lois Underwood, 79 years, departed her earthly dwelling and entered eternal rest peacefully on April 14, 2021. She came joyfully into this life on June 1.8, 1941 in Enfield, North Carolina to the late Wade and Corine Manley. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Charles Underwood and sons, Charles Wayne Underwood and Ivan Gregory Underwood. The Manley family moved to Richmond, Virginia in the 60s to work for a better life. Jean, affectionately known as "Jeannie, Miss Jean or Merna" was educated in the Richmond Public Schools, attending Armstrong High School. She worked for Miller & Rhoads as a Lead in various departments, and retired as a Supervisor from A. H. Robbins in 2003. At an early age, Jean accepted Christ and was baptized in North Carolina. Later, she joined First Union Baptist Church of Mechanicsville, Virginia under The Reverend Dr. Bernard S. Giles. Jean married the love of her life, James "Bubba" Charles Underwood and from this union they had five sons. She will always be remembered for her favorite dish of cornbread and sausage, and for encouraging others to do the right thing. If you didn't listen, she would say, "I will put you over my knee." She loved to entertain and had a big, big heart treating all her grandchildren and great-grands the same. She will be missed by family, friends and all who knew her. Remaining to cherish her memories are her loving children, Waverly Tuppince, Bernard Carl Underwood, Rodney Keith Underwood (Johari); brother James Manley (Marsha); sister Inez Bagby; sister-in-law Delorise Cotman; brother-in-law Wilbert Langston Underwood (Tina); a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving relatives and friends; and devoted Theresa Warren, whom Momma Jean called the daughter she never had.
