January 23, 1937 - November 7, 2021
Jesus and my family in Heaven have called my name. They have prepared a place in Heaven for me. In my father's house there are many mansions and on the 7th day of November, 2021, he prepared to receive me. I was born on January 23, 1937, the 9th child of Lonnie and Bessie Smith. I was raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia until age 15, a year after my father died. My mother moved the remaining family members to Baltimore, Maryland. There, I attended Frederick Douglas High School and graduated two years later. I played basketball and football. I received a football scholarship from four Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) and I chose Morgan State College to attend. Prior to graduating, I joined the United States Marine Corps. After serving four years active duty, I returned to and graduated from Morgan with a B.A. degree. I went on to attend the University of Louisville, in Kentucky, earning a Master's degree and later earning a PhD. I worked as an administrator for the states of Kentucky and Maryland. While in both states, I practiced psychotherapy. I loved to travel and went to North and West Africa, Canada, Europe, Asia, several Caribbean Islands, and 30 of the 50 United States. I held memberships in the NAACP, American Legion Freemasons, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Morgan State Alumni Association, and Honor Society in Psychology. I was married to Rosa Boston Smith (deceased) and fathered Sybil, Simone, and Synessa. Then married to Mary Parker Smith (divorced), I fathered Gilbert Jr., Kevin, and Margaret. I leave to mourn my six children, nineteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren as well as my two sisters, Barbara Wright and Josephine Gray, my best friend (Mary Coleman), a "son-like" nephew (Albert James), and a host of nieces, nephews, and family too numerous to count. Written by the late Gilbert A. Smith, Sr.
